Do you know why physicists wanted to put a ferret inside a particle accelerator?

Physicists wanted to use Felicia the high energy ferret to clean metal slithers from accelerator vacuum tubes!

Great to see this in the headlines this morning. A scientific breakthrough restoring sight to people with hypotony – a condition that causes blindness. The gel, already commonly used in eye surgery, can restore the shape of the eye and significantly improve vision.

The best time to get your flu shot was fall, but the second best time is now! 🧪
This year’s flu season just surpassed a grim new record.

Nearly 1 in 10 doctor visits in late December were for flu-like symptoms—the highest level recorded in nearly 30 years. To date, the U.S. has seen 120,000+ hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths, including children. bit.ly/3LkZiOI

Astronomers have discovered one of the largest spinning structures in the known universe.

This "cosmic filament" is 50 million light years long & contains 100s of galaxies that seem to be rotating in alignment. It's part of an even greater web linking the cosmos. 🧪🔭

Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!

Throughout history, people have pitted town & country against each other. Where does this dynamic come from? And how do we transcend it?

In this two-part episode, @georgemonbiot.bsky.social joins us to explore these questions & more.

🧪The average cell uses 10 billion ATP per day
🧪Each ATP needs to be recycled from ADP 1000 times per day.
🧪Because the body cannot store ATP, the mitochondria must make more continually (especially for the brain which use 70% of our ATP).
🧪Our cells have 250 g of ATP, about 4.25 watts

More raccoons? Turns out it would be bad news.

We're predicting where key reservoirs of the raccoon rabies virus (🦝 and 🦨) may be in Québec by 2100, and if we don't act on climate change, the answer may be: everywhere. 🧪
Climate change may dramatically increase the range of raccoons and skunks in Québec. Good news? Nope. They are two reservoirs of the raccoon rabies virus. In a recent preprint, we discuss how this might play out over the next 80 years. 🧪🧵

I like writing explainers about things like: What colors do bees see? Do bugs fart? How long can viruses survive in a dead body? What's the difference between hemp and marijuana?

But my brain is wrung dry. I need questions! 🧪🧵
