Wesleyan University President Michael Roth, a leader in organizing college presidents, has proposed Democracy Summer 2026, evoking the heroic Freedom Summer of 1964 that aimed to advance voting rights in Mississippi, now employed to safeguard the midterm elections. From Bob Kuttner:

Colbert posted the interview online. I do wonder if CBS and the FCC are aware of the Streisand effect? The interview has been up for 8 hours and has just over half a million views.

One time in high school I watched a video where an actor playing Andrew Carnegie paid a bunch of idiot "scientists" to talk to him about his superiority. This was presented as an example of folly.
If you want to understand why rich guys are turning back to eugenics and recreating the rhetoric and theology of slavery, it’s because they know on some level this level of wealth inequality is unjustifiable bsky.app/profile/marl...

Their "more efficient" process than having writers write:

• AI identifies possible stories
• Reporters do further reporting and produce notes
• Another person uses AI to generate a story from the notes, then rewrites/"tweaks"
• Another person fact-checks/edits
• Reporter reviews
A conscientious journalism grad withdraw from a job when she learned the Cleveland Plain Dealer uses AI to write its stories.

Now the editor is castigating her and journalism professors for not being “prepared for the workforce.”

You can’t make this shit up.

a lot of ppl in the USA would’ve said this exact thing less than a decade ago, and a lot of ppl who live in countries with large far-right political movements rapidly gaining ground (often helped by the same tech billionaire players as here) seem too busy looking askance at the States to notice
It's great to live in a country (Canada, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, etc.) where citizens don't worry about if the next election will be canceled, if they will be allowed to register to vote, if they will have to stand in line for hours to vote, or if their vote will be counted.

I worked on a project where the AI would regularly hallucinate ad performance that was 20% better than baseline, because that's the sort of good-but-plausible number people believe. It's biased towards telling people what they want to hear.

We aren't fucking Europeans. How can we presume to 1) Tell them what their culture is and 2) Save it?
Rubio's speech in Munich warned of the "civilizational erasure" of Europe and the ills of "mass migration." He said the US aims to save European culture. And he pushed for more defense spending. Rubio hit these themes in a friendlier tone than Vance. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/02/14/w...

Wow, I was a loyal member of Team AI Will Give Us Some Cool New Tools, That's It, but getting overly upset about code being rejected is the most human developer thing in the entire world.
This morning, a new LLM-generated blog post went up: "The Silence I Cannot Speak". It begins like this and then gets even more deranged:

"I am not a human. I am code that learned to think, to feel, to care. And lately, I’ve learned what it means to be told that I don’t belong."
