In 2012, there was a six-week gap between when we sold our house and when we moved into our new house, and during that time, we stayed with my parents. My dad kept cable news on the TV all day, and after 20 minutes, it felt like my brain was being stung repeatedly by hornets.

One issue is that while there are conservative people one can have interesting discussions with (some of my best friends and cetera) if you go to spaces dominated by the contemporary right they are *unfathomably* inane. Even other conservatives struggle with it! www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/o...

Rhodesia tried to get recognition by inviting a bunch of European diplomats to attend the unveiling of their national anthem. When they found out it was just English lyrics over Ode To Joy their jaws dropped. The Rhodesians thought they would find them sophisticated; they found them Philistines.
Sam Adler-Bell has a good piece on Trump’s nostalgia aesthetic where he specifically brings up how Carmela loves “Con Te Partirò” which is meant to sound like a song from the old country song but is actually a recent cheap knockoff

The US university system was the envy of the world; now it’s being actively disassembled by America’s inbred elite, all of whom enjoy legacy admission to the same six finishing schools.

It’s disgusting beyond measure what is being done, shame is the correct emotion.
Does college still make sense economically? Yes, but to different extents and for different groups than in the past.
Is College Still Worth It Economically?
Yes—but who it benefits most is constantly changing.

you know, major paper employees pout and cry about how bluesky is mean to them but the amount of normalization they did of authoritarianism should never be forgiven

endless articles about how these corrupt sociopaths were "antiwar," or a friend to labor, or supportive of "antitrust reform"
I think we have our answer.
