This is the exact same for lower level abusers too. My abusers were often very smart, good looking, and connected. They could have had consenting sex with enthusiastic partners. They preferred abuse. I call them rape-sexual
Here's the thing about Neil Gaiman. He knows what consent is. He knows about power differentials. He KNOWS. And with his money and fame, he could have had all the consensual sex and BDSM he wanted. He did what he did because he LIKED the power. He LIKED getting away with it. He LIKED hurting women.
