Every time there’s another horrific shooting, I think of this kid. Praying for everyone on that Brown campus.
thinking about this student after the 2018 Santa Fe shooting

"Was there a part of you that was like, 'this isn't real, this wouldn't happen at my school'?"
"No. There wasn't, um-"
"Why so?"
"It's been happening everywhere, I felt, I've always kind of felt like eventually it would happen here, too."

Remember: The oligarchs who control our economy and democracy seek to divide us so they can become more powerful.

They want us to turn on each other so we don't look up and see where all the wealth and power have gone.

Don't fall for it.

If you're wondering what happened to Nate Silver, he was into the COVID lab leak theory and got negative feedback online, including from epidemiologists and virologists and (GASP!) posters, which added to his belief that The Woke are victimizing Nate Silver. It spiraled from there.

I'm not kidding.

yeah this is the part of Nate-style popularism that bothers me the most - the idea that having principles is not smart and not savvy and generally beneath them

the result is treating public opinion as immutable because how can you change people’s minds if you don’t believe in anything yourself
like his complaint is literally that there are people who believe in things, believe those things are right, and believe in those things regardless of whether they are popular.

This is part of why a *lot* of the power elite need to log off.

A massive chunk of our current woes (including the transphobic moral panic) is a result of these people getting mad at someone on Twitter and memeing that into some kind of national crisis.
related to this a lot of people in the pundit class need to learn how to just be annoyed by someone or something without turning it into What’s Wrong With America
i am fascinated by how nate silver turns everything he doesn’t like into a bespoke ideology. it’s not that he is annoyed by HCR, it is that she is a dreaded “ism” responsible for everything he doesn’t like about the democratic party. same with bluesky.

For a long time, that was THEE affect that signaled you were a Real Journalist: being savvy and smart enough to know that people with principles were quaint, pitiable little curiosities. And if those people happen to be women, well then they're also just downright childish.
i’ll add that what substantively seems to annoy silver is the existence of people with principles

There’s an urgent need for blood in the aftermath of the Brown University shooting

If you can give, please do

If you can’t, please spread the word

Its terrifying to think how bad this shooting might be if they need an urgent call for blood, but the more people donating the more lives we can save
I am a student at Brown in communication with a friend at RIBC.

There is an urgent need for blood donations to support RI. Donations in NY, NJ, MN, NB, DE or NJ can help supply RI.

Spread the word.

I teach Sociology of Childhood, and when we talk about school shootings, my students tell me about how they also do these checks in their classes--noting locks on doors, thinking about how to escape and where to hide. I hate that they have to mind those risks while trying to learn.
Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

Colleagues and I have repeatedly pointed out that many of our classrooms are unsafe. On a campus that allows guns. Nobody with authority cares. At one presentation, the head of security assure us that all the cameras on campus would quickly ID who killed us/our students.

On the eve of the Sandy Hook anniversary, there has been another campus shooting. This time at Brown University.

To the people in power: this is your legacy.

Thirteen years. Thirteen years of dead children, traumatized students, shattered families — while you stall, deflect, and do nothing.

The way the word elites has become devoid of all meaning is interesting. It’s a placeholder for “someone I don’t like” and it fascinates me that the people who use it most are wealthy, went to “elite” schools and hold positions of power. Look in the damn mirror. You’re talking about yourself.
