Stereolab was good too but I most enjoyed Laetitia Sadier thanking “Natural International Society” very Frenchly.

Can’t believe Tors got top billing over Bers.

For all the "Hearts of Fire" sickos, @raypadgett.bsky.social is asking the important questions. Another great interview today: www.flaggingdown.com/p/producer-b...

Another incredible interview by Ray!

Happy Hearts of Fire day to those who celebrate! I talked to Beau Hill, Music Director of the movie and producer of the soundtrack, about months of chaos working on Bob Dylan's infamous flop

And I got an answer to the question we've all been asking: How much did Bob really know about Ratt?

This goes for any use of overrated or underrated, because the question is always "by who?" and the answer (if they even bother) never holds up to scrutiny.

An especially silly example, but I see "[much-celebrated legend] is underrated/overlooked" WAY too much these days. IDK if you're young, or hang with the wrong people, or are just desperate for an angle, but this is a very boring (as well as inaccurate) way to discuss someone.

It's honestly a really interesting dynamic that would maybe make a good movie (though I'm pretty sure it's not this one).

Yeah, this has been pretty obnoxious! Surprising reason in the thread though.

Most of the Deliver Me From Nowhere commercials make it look like it's about how much Jon Landau wants to kiss Bruce Springsteen?

I've been haunted by this Duke Ellington cover from James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg since I saw them perform it at Sound & Gravity. It's just fantastic.

Got a lot riding on the Cubs game today (if they lose I might go see One Battle After Another at the Music Box tomorrow night).

I am very proud that @kellogginsight.bsky.social is able to pay human artists to illustrate silly ideas like "can we show scientists spraying champagne around like a locker room celebration?"

Reinventing Halloween from album covers to original music was a very crowd-unfriendly move (at first) that has paid huge dividends, I think...not just in adding fresh material, but pushing them to new sounds

And I think that passage was more about not taking the easy path and just trailing off into greatest hits shows. Recent projects like post-cover Halloweens, festival secret sets, the Sphere shows, NYE gags...all creative challenges that they don't need to do any more. But they do!

One big takeaway from listening to the 90s chronologically is...they had jamming formulas back then too! It's just easier to notice now that we have instant access to every show.

Their two-year hiatus also means a much-needed break for my newsletter project, but as you'll find at the end of this post, I've got some surprise editions in mind. Thanks to everyone who has been reading along!

Phish's first era ended in exhaustion, an understandable result after a decade of reinvention and risk:

Man, I don't know if I agree with that! Maybe I'm grading on an aging curve, but they are still much more unpredictable and self-challenging than I would expect, certainly far more than a Buffett-style act.
