Federal grants to libraries from the Institute of Museum and Library Services have been reinstated all across the country: www.npr.org/2025/12/04/n...

But we're not done yet. Congress MUST #FundLibraries in next year's budget. Take action now: app.oneclickpolitics.com/campaign-pag...
Libraries and museums get federal funding back after Trump cuts
Earlier this year, the Trump administration gutted the Institute of Museum and Library Services, leading to canceled federal grants. Now, after a court order, those grants are being reinstated.

My family's been loving the DVD section at the library this year as we cut back on streaming $. The kids love getting to pick them, and as a parent, it's nice to have a finite limit to some of the movies. 🤫😆
Always good to be reminded that one doesn't have to be in thrall to the streamers for one's entertainment. As someone who's recently been dismayed at how many DVD's are out of print because their manufacturer has gone out of business, I found this passage especially telling:

Don’t forget if the Institute of Museum and Library Services doesn’t get funded next year, many public libraries won’t be able to fund ILL anymore. Write your legislators to support IMLS funding, please!

I love ILL. It is the bestest ever.
A couple weeks ago we got a lovely note from someone on the other side of the country thanking us profusely for ILLing a book to them. Curious, we looked up the book they borrowed.

It would have cost $1,200 for them to purchase it.

ILL is one of the things I love most about libraries.
Requested a book through ILL over break. It arrived today. Libraries man.

One thing that distinguishes @ass.golf's A.I.'s (formerly "anthro-PC's", now pretty much just regular robots) from the slop-purveying software being passed off as "AI" in our neck of the woods of possibility - and I love this about them - is that they're capable of self-doubt. 1/

You really have to read this thread. The genius of Tom Stoppard, the fragility of memory, the magic of theatre — and the glorious stubbornness of a researcher who would not stop.
Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

It's okay for some campaign promises to be about optics rather than policy. "We're going to bulldoze his monument to himself on Day One and rebuild the East Wing" would be a very good one for 2028.

WALL-E. (Also a screwball romance and a partially pantomimed action comedy.)
Without saying Star Wars, name a science fiction film.

The only 2025 film I've seen so far is Elio (which I very much enjoyed). Besides Sinners, the 10 new films I'm most interested in seeing are:

Bugonia
Hamnet
It Was Just an Accident
KPop Demon Hunters
No Other Choice
One Battle After Another
The Phoenician Scheme
The Secret Agent
Superman
Zootopia 2
Without saying Sinners, name your film of the year.

Well, this was fewer than I expected, especially given [makes vague gestures at current world situation]. I wonder if some of the swear shortage comes from my tendency to self-censor (e.g. f-ck), and some from creative euphemism and circumlocution.
@robtomshany.bsky.social has swears! They've used 101 profanities in their last 1,959 posts.

So I've seen this from other Bluesky accounts, and now I'm curious... @profanity.accountant, how am I doing?

Alt-texting a very good question about Tim Walz along with a very apt answer.

[Social media posts from br. stahl - "What is it about Tim Walz that has so triggered the right?" - and gbrockell - "He exposes how easy it would be for a straight white man to be decent."]

The Smithsonian LP (later CD) box set American Musical Theater: Shows, Songs and Stars contains many vintage recordings of Broadway musical songs, and for years all I knew of "Pins and Needles" was the song "Chain Store Daisy" from this set. This thread taught me a lot more - check it out! 1/
This Day in Labor History: November 27, 1937. The International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) debuted its play “Pins and Needles,” which would become the longest running musical of the 1930s. Let's talk about this moment of labor feminism meeting popular culture!
