#31daysofgraves Day 10 urn. We have a few urns at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. This is my favourite, as I'm rather partial to a palmette or two or three! John Watson manager of Airthrey paper mill and wife Mary Coubrough. Note blue sky, at last.

#31daysofgraves Day 9 hand. Dunblane Cathedral graveyard doesn't seem to have any carvings of hands, so I've opted for this epitaph instead. 'Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling.'

B/W detail of the architectural decoration above the chapel door. The large hand, descending from a cloud, holds five praying figures in its palm. Oral sources indicate that these are five children who, due to illness, all died in quick succession.

#31daysofgraves Day 8 glass. John Gauld of Glass, Banffshire, Detective Sergeant, worked in Perthshire Constabulary for almost 30yrs. Also Andrew Barlas head gardener on Glassingall estate. Died when blood vessel burst while he had a stretch! Dunblane Cathedral graveyard.

It is hard to believe! In fact it would be impossible to tell if it weren't for the fact the minster, who had these pictures taken, drew a little map and that this one is next to the only iron marker in that area. Our other 18th century ones are a bit better, but also some have disappeared 😔

The archangel Gabriel with a large scroll is probably watching over a man of God (and his family), or he may have been a writer of clear communication to identify Gabriel as his heavenly guide.
Unfortunately I couldn't get closer to the grave to learn more, but I will.

#31daysofgraves Day 6 gender, Stuart Craig Dow beloved wife of D. A. McLaren Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. Her family stuck strictly to the Scottish traditions of naming, her gdmother also called Stuart. Mother's maiden name was Stewart. Died age 33 at Royal Samaritan Hospital for Women in Glasgow.

#31daysofgraves day 5 - bird. James Robin, joiner died age 40, in 1886 went he fell down steps outside his house and fractured his skull. Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. There is one actual carved bird on a headstone, but I used that last year. Image from Dunblane Museum, by Len Bovill.

#31daysofgraves day 4 language. Headstone Very Rev Monsignor Paul Maclachlan, Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, 'Requiescat in Pace'. Roman Catholic Parish priest at Doune. He intended to say the first mass in the new chapel in Dunblane, where he was to retire to, but died 3 weeks before.
