October Glory is an apt name for these maples, showing off their red splendor at the nursery! #trees
The image shows a group of young trees with brilliant red and orange autumn foliage, likely **red maples (Acer rubrum)** or a similar species known for vivid fall color. The trees are **balled and burlapped**, meaning their root systems are wrapped in burlap and tied for transport or planting. They are lined up neatly in a **nursery or tree farm**, set in rows on a sandy, slightly muddy ground. A drip irrigation line runs along the soil, indicating the trees are being maintained before being sold or transplanted. The sky above is overcast, creating a soft, diffused light that enhances the rich fall colors.

Lots of monarchs out and about at the nursery today ❤️
A monarch butterfly (orange wings with black striping) sips nectar from a compound, yellow butterfly bush flower, with narrow green leaves beneath it. The door frame of a greenhouse is visible in the blurred background

Mind you, my county supervisors are all MAGA people, and I’ve never had a personal response from any representative or senator I’ve contacted, so this was a welcome surprise!

Tonight, we pushed city council members (and for those of us in the surrounding counties, our local supervisors) to create an energy efficiency program to help people better afford their energy bills. My supervisor emailed me back w/in 30 minutes and offered to meet up for breakfast to talk about it

A few months ago I joined a local group that’s part of a national network of climate activists called Climate Changemakers; we meet every other Tuesday for an “hour of action” at which we write/call our elected officials (or sometimes electoral “get out the vote” action)

Finally cool enough in SoCal SanGabrielValley to cook with the oven. Trying Samin Nosrat’s buttermilk chicken recipe.

This little butternut squash (harvested from the communal garden I volunteer in) had an expressive moment in the midst of food prep. It’s now cubed and ready to go in oven.
🌱
Butternut squash cut in half with the small seed belly looking like a mouth opened in distress with seeds spilling out, and a couple of eyes carved out higher on the fleshy part of the squash. Scene on cutting board with vegetable peeler on kitchen counter.

Governor Newsom has a bill on his desk to hold utilities accountable, and get them to stop passing along their dark money campaigns to everyday Californians.

Is he going to side with utilities, or side with the public and help lower electricity rates?

California passes bill curbing utilities use of ratepayer money for political spending
State lawmakers last week made California the seventh state to pass a bill limiting investor-owned utilities from using customer money to pay for political and lobbying costs.

@inaturalist.bsky.social taking money from Google to implement AI in your app isn’t going to be worth the volunteers quitting protest. Which in turn is really bad for plant ID and research in general. Still time to reverse course!

Common milkweed (Aesclepias syriacus) I assume? My mom planted some of that years ago and she found new shoots coming up all the way at the other end of her yard! Swamp milkweed (A. incarnata) in my experience has been much better behaved, growing in a clump instead of spreading by rhizomes

Oh, didn’t realize Blue Mistflower spreads quickly. Good to know!

Curious if anyone has any natives plants that they aren’t real keen on. If so, let me know what they are.

I’m not a huge fan of Virginia creeper vine. Grows extremely quickly and takes over everything in sight in no time. I’m constantly pulling it up out of my azaleas and other plants

Caught my lilies lit up by the sunset and had to take a photo.

What a beautiful analogy, and a timely one as I was just lamenting the sorry state of the world right now. Hummingbirds are such a treat to enjoy when they’re around!

We’ve had a busted sprinkler for a hot minute, and haven’t yet gotten it repaired.

This morning it gave me a reminder that there can still be joy even when things are broken. 🪶

(I believe this is an Anna’s Hummingbird)

Mookie Betts, Rafael Devers and Chris Sale have netted Vaughn Grissom, Alex Verdugo, Connor Wong, Jeter Downs, Jordan Hicks, and Kyle Harrison. Those trades would have the Red Sox kicked out of a fantasy league.

No. Nothing in his stats suggests that.
