Now that pushing protein is trendy again, I’m starting to see proponents of the “Brewer diet” (& its variants) crop up in online birth communities again.

As a preeclampsia expert I need to reiterate that eating more protein will NOT prevent or treat preeclampsia.

Wuthering Heights to me is a ghost story about haunting and deeply felt loss.

Folks should remember that the DOJ is releasing selectively and consider what this release intends. Trump covers crime with scandal. He'd rather be seen as a mocked man having consensual sex than as a rapist and pedophile. Epstein would rather be seen as a snarky gossip than a pedophile trafficker.

Devastated to learn that Univ of Texas at Austin is closing the American Studies dept. The years I spent there earning my PhD were formative, making me the teacher, thinker, and writer I am today. I've passed on what I learned at UT to thousands of students over the past 20 years. Just awful.

The rock crystal material was believed to possess special properties and was often used for amulets due to its clarity and durability. The hippopotamus, in Egyptian mythology, was associated with fertility, protection, and the power to ward off evil. These amulets were commonly worn or placed in tombs as a form of spiritual protection or to ensure a successful afterlife. Rock crystal, also known as quartz crystal, held significant importance in ancient Egypt. It was highly valued for its clarity, beauty, and believed metaphysical properties. Egyptians used rock crystal for various purposes, including jewelry, amulets, and religious artifacts. Rock crystal was often carved into intricate amulets and charms, such as the aforementioned hippopotamus amulet, to provide protection and ward off evil spirits. As a result, the ancient Egyptians believed that wearing or possessing hippopotamus figurines made from glass, faience or semi-precious stones would provide protection against malevolent forces, particularly in the realm of childbirth and fertility.”

The hippo is painted in profile with head lowered and to the right. The body is outlined with black paint and painted brown. The belly, eyes, and ears are painted red. Although the ancient Egyptians were well aware of the danger and destructive power of hippos, this painted hippo has rather a friendly face! Dimensions: H. 10.8 cm (4 1/4 in); W. 12 cm (4 3/4 in); Th. 1.7 cm (11/16 in) Egyptian artists made practice sketches on flakes of limestone, sometimes for use as templates when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available because of the constant construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of such sketches were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations. This painting was acquired by the museum in the division of finds.
