That the illegal destruction of USAID will kill more than *20 million people* in the next five years, & has ALREADY KILLED 600,000 in just one year, is a world-historical crime that Americans aren't being told about in the terms & with the repetition necessary for them to believe it.

Even on paper, I think it should work better than it does. Getting jumped by a hungry-eyed murderer who wants to kill you for your expired beans, but is also dressed in chic loungewear and horned-rim glasses, should work on a basic ironic level, but it's played so straight they dodge the joke

It doesn't even feel like the old world is dead. Like, most people who aren't dressed like space pirates are still wearing the same shit. A two-hundred-year old hat is objectively less of a historical artifact in Fallout than a fast fashion tank top from 2019 is to us.

It means the past doesn't get to be mysterious in the way that even very bad, unoriginal post-apocalyptic grindhouse flicks were. You see it and go "I guess no further questions"

The aesthetic of 3D-era Fallout is probably a design masterpiece, and is objectively a home run from a brand standpoint, but I'm kinda cold on it. It makes the pre-bomb era feel like one big Halloween costume.

If I was bodyswapped with a celebrity, this is how I'd gracefully transition out of public life. No scandals, no mysterious exit, I'd just run one weak bit into the ground until my phone stopped ringing.

Every time I do it there's AI generated headlines like NEW RIDDLER PROJECT TEASED? and DC's like no man he's not even doing a good Riddler, we did not pay for that Riddler, that's not a money Riddler for fuck's sake

If I was cast as the Riddler in anything I would thereafter respond to all interview question with a dogshit impression of the Riddler. Grinch fingers, spinning chair, "wwWOULDn't YOU like to know?"
Paul Dano was asked if he will return as The Riddler in Matt Reeves' 'The Batman' franchise 🦇

He smiled and said — "Oh I don't know. I can't say ... It's a good question too"

Times are scary. I hope everyone out there can stay safe and the violence and abduction can end soon. I'm thinking about it and I care too.

I think a hard reality is that "varying in quality" is the secret ingredient that made most classic Bethesda moments possible. Some of it was always bad, but there were no outrage merchants to focus on those parts instead of the stuff that kicked ass.

...and while, for all I know, they're actually GREAT about granting those resources to random devs who want to try something cool, it is not what I would guess as an outsider. And I suspect my assumption would considerably impact what I'm doing as an employee.

At the same time, the games have gotten so expensive, so visually realistic, that you can't introduce new mechanics or setpieces for a given quest without a tremendous technical investment or it else it looks like a shitty mod...

Which means the whole never really escapes the vision. You get something that has neither the uniqueness of an auteur's vision nor the color, variety, and life of something made by a lot of authors. You get one or two ideas with a million palette swaps.
January 17, 2026 at 6:25 PM
This doesn't necessarily look like junior devs getting censored all the time, either. There is a passive, chilling effect to making art when there are too many layers between you and the top: you end up pitching content you know is likely to get in because it's closer to the Vision™️.
January 17, 2026 at 6:23 PM
Everything I've disliked about their games since, to be honest, Skyrim has felt like the direct result of a studio where fewer and fewer people feel like they can just Make Something. The junior staff don't feel empowered to and the senior staff are increasingly busy managing everything else.

The design suffered. Projects did poorly. And if bureaucratic companies tend to be slow in all matters, there is nothing on the planet as slow as a bureaucratic company trying to figure out What Went Wrong and come up with a solution.
January 17, 2026 at 6:15 PM
Every so often I see people speculate about "what happened" with Bethesda, but I've never felt that urge because it's kind of transparent. The company got bigger. Its scope got larger. The needs of managing projects that large and expensive fed back into the design.

This is interesting without being in any way surprising.

To be frank with you that is genuinely what marketing slide decks for brands like Dunarkoos look like, in-house

It tickles me that in theory, British panel shows are about seeing the guy you know from the thing doing some light banter out-of-character. Except I mostly watch panel shows, so every time I catch a scripted program I feel like I'm watching a clip of a fake movie from a show where the MC's an actor

Like, the house is on fire. It is crucial to take that seriously. But there's a reason nobody yells, "quick, everybody panic." That's the substance of depression.
January 3, 2026 at 7:22 PM
My "thoughts" aren't half as much trouble, even when they're about serious topics: health, family, politics, the environment. Being non-depressed isn't "thinking" those things are going badly, which is handy, because the thoughts lead to actions and the flash leads to inaction.
January 3, 2026 at 7:20 PM
As someone who thinks very verbally, like I'm writing an essay in my head, a tricky thing is that painful or negative thoughts often don't come in words. It's not what I call a "thought," it's a little flash, a vision of doom or failure, spliced in like a single frame of film.
