So, today I totally forgot about hosting a q&a session online, but then I think nearly everyone else did too. I'm still trying to write an exam question, and I'm moderating on an absolute monster of a module that lasts the entire year and has several components. Oh, and we have a HUGE 1st yr cohort.

Being able to write an engaging short story is a real skill. The master is, of course, Stephen King but others have also been successful.

I have heard this so many times from publishers & agents over the years: "short stories don't sell". And I've been told it again recently. But is that a reason not to write short stories? No. I love short stories and, at the moment, I need to write short stories, so I'm going to write short stories.

I have been made very aware that perhaps the least commercially sensible move an author can make in this day and age - particularly a writer unpaid by his ex-publisher - is to write a collection of short stories so of late I've been devoting my time to writing a collection of short stories.

I can't understand why so many people linger there. You can't avoid the adverts, or the hate, so why? I suspect with some it's because they think their large follower count is actively engaged but I bet they're not. Most followers are now ghosts.

My single, solitary premium bond, bought about 20 years ago, had just won me £50. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 21,000. If I'd had it in a savings account it might have been worth about £130, so I'm a bottle of gin up on the deal.

I picked up 2 Aldi Essentials white sliced loaves for fishing. It's no use because, once liquidised, it becomes dust.

I didn't open the second loaf. It's sat here since the 28th July and still has no mold on it. It's unchanged.

What the fuck is it made of? Chalk?

There used to be. We used to have a police force that functioned for ordinary people, and legal aid. All gone, and more and more people are beginning to realise that they can do what they like with no consequences.
