Introduced my wife to Practical Magic tonight. Before it started, she asked "is it gay?" and I said "no but it was very Formative for young witchy gays at the time."

Something I'm musing on: the endless churn of Content to Consume as fast as possible, the push for people to recklessly seek out the hottest new show/book/movie/trend and discard the old... It hinders our critical thinking skills.

As promised, if you’re inspired by the march today but don’t know how else to get involved, how to sustainably fight fascism, that can look a few different ways. Here’s a thread of thoughts, short of nationwide withholding of labor / sustained protest:

"I hope your favorite character gets killed off" is basic.

"I hope your favorite character gets the Spock treatment in endless remakes and prequels" is smart. It's possible. It's terrifying.

Watching this now, and WHOOF am I glad I canceled Paramount+ when I did (I was mostly hanging onto it for Trek, and did NOT like the initial trajectory of SNW s3 for many of the reasons outlined here).
My essay on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is now up on Patreon! Trek has slid from bold futures into eugenics jokes & nostalgia cosplay right as the franchise is sold in a tech oligarch-funded merger enabling our growing fascist culture.

I love when people who are commenting on my fics reference/reply to other commenters. I like the idea of communities finding each other and hanging out in my comments, it's just nice.

Signal boost!
For my household as we continue to navigate multiple health issues for all of us (3 humans and 2 cats), two cars that need repairing, and many more crises.

We're doing this while 1 person is seeking work, 1 is on disability, and 1 works full time as much as possible.

Affirmation for today is this:

If you hold even one of the targeted identities of the fascists and you survive today?

You are already winning against them and doing your part.

If you manage to find even a moment of peace, joy, laughter, or beauty during the day? Even better!

Why are longer video essays easier to parse for my ADHD brain than shorter ones? How does that make sense??

You know, I don't have hard proof but I mentally directly tie in the rise of readerfic and OFCfic with the rise in female leads / love interests that are WoC... I could be wrong but. It would track.

This banned book week, instead of spending $40 on a hardback by a dead guy whose books aren't going to be forgotten, consider buying several from marginalized living authors who at risk of being pushed out of writing by platform censorship. Maybe learn how to read ebooks that aren't on big apps.

I haven't seen Sopranos or Breaking Bad. Idk, I'm just not interested in shows about the white male crime epidemic.
Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

AI isn’t a person.

But people who want to make a “person” they can use however they want. To treat it like a toy, pet, servant, or sexual object aren’t more intellectually superior.

They’re morally bankrupt.

The phrase "comfort character" rubs me the wrong way and I don't know how to unpack it yet.

I've discussed this on Tumblr, but: I have gotten FAR more harassment from self-described "pr0shippers" for talking about bigotry in fandom than I have from "antis" for my many, many fics with controversial content. It's not even remotely a contest between the two categories.

This is why I'm wary of published books that used to be fanfic. It's not because I think they're all shallow trash. It's because I don't trust (ymmv) that the author, agent, or editor know *why a fanfic can be good in the first place,* nor how to translate that into standalone stories.
