If you are celebrating violence, take a moment to think of whether you still have the moral high ground. Even if you despise them, you can still be the better person and recognize that loss of life is never cause for celebration.

Now that I’m back from #riptide2025 and my TL is full of LAN sentiments, I decided to add my own piece. As both a writer and a sentimental person, I can’t speak with brevity about how much this first LAN experience meant to me, and the amount of thanks I have for everyone there. (Thread 1/8 🧵)
A photo of a banner in a convention hall. The banner takes up the majority of the image, centered, with a white wall behind it on the left and right. There is a white door to the left, and a brown carpet underneath. The banner is a tall rectangle, with about 1/6th of the top being a dark blue and the rest being yellow. At the top is a white logo that says "Riptide" with dark blue, light blue, yellow, and pink shadows beneath the text. In the yellow area of the banner, black text reads, "SPLATOON", and it is placed on its side horizontally. Around "SPLATOON" are clusters of assorted stickers left by attendees, of several characters and objects.

The community involvement in the Splatoon NA League is absolutely the biggest breakthrough of this whole event. It shows that Nintendo NA is in fact invested in everything we have done and that they are still all-in on our "little" esports scene here. This feels like a decade in the making.

In the top right and bottom left corners are blue ink puddles. To the left of the center, white text reads, "Upcoming Major Splatoon 3 Fall Tournaments". To the right of the text is an orange and blue kraken with a fleur de lis pattern, surrounded by orange ink splashes

Riptide getting ~500 attendees is blowing my mind.

Those are numbers that attract eyes, if you actively push in the right places. Not just the “oh this is a fun little game I’ll ‘sponsor’ a team”, but the peripheral companies and the energy drink teams, looking for opportunities.

When you, as a victim SSC was attempting to help, perpetuated lies and vitriol so only YOU could speak on the matter — under the threat of legal enforcements and public backlash — they have every right to disprove their claims (like how YOU did the same).

You are the exception, not the good kind.

I haven’t seen any TOs speak to whether or not it was appropriate to reveal a person’s DMs and documents shared in confidence. I’m worried that, in doing so, SSC muddled the message of wanting to appear more trustworthy. I would love to hear a TOs take on that.

you may ask: why does my stream get shit from a butt for viewership

answer: casuals/viewers arent on twitch, other platforms like tiktok are untapped markets that we need to sell to

(part of the) solution: stream to multiple places at once!! its free!! obsproject.com/forum/resour...

I've remained silent on recent discussion, and will probably remain to do so, but

If people in this community have the ability to put hours of their time each week to help run it

You can put 5 extra minutes to word something mindfully and with nuance

Be respectful, we all want the same thing

There's not a single Splatoon TO whos extrinsically motivated to do this, btw. No one is making a living off this, we are not "professionals", we're humans who put our own time, effort, and resources into making this work.

My thoughts on Splat Safety and recent community discussion
Image of part 1 of a text reading:

I understand that this discussion is extremely emotional for many. However, I hope we can all find common ground in that something like Splat Safety should exist. Without something like it, TOs and organizers (like me) could not do the work they want to do and would likely quit (and we're already seeing a lot of organizers expressing that they are no longer motivated). More importantly, victims would have to make their case to many different orgs to get perpetrators out of the community, and I don't think any org would be equipped to adequately investigate a situation like Splat Safety does. Without something like Splat Safety, the community becomes a much more hostile environment towards victims.

I trust Splat Safety, and its volunteers have my utmost respect. They voluntarily and repeatedly investigate the darkest sides of our community to keep it safe, without any pay, without anyone saying thank you, with many community members spreading hate against their work. I cannot stress enough how emotionally difficult that must be. I imagine the only thing that keeps them going are altruistic beliefs in a better and safer community. Image of part 2 of a text reading:

I can see how others do not have that same trust, especially if you feel Splat Safety has acted unjustly. I hope that some can watch their video and see the same maturity and responsibility for a safer community that I did, but I also understand that some will not. Trust takes time to build, and is almost impossible to keep up for a small volunteer org like Splat Safety, when the cases they regularly deal with too often contain extremely dividing sides. I hope you can at least see that Splat Safety and its volunteers have good intention.

I understand and encourage voicing criticism you have of Splat Safety. I would ask you, however, to not spread hate or misinformation. Sending emotional, short, and not-fact-checked messages is far easier and faster than trying to investigate and find the truth. Please take the time to carefully review the public information we have before sharing your opinion. Please realize that in many cases, you will not and should not have access to every part of a case. Spreading hate and hurtful messages doesn't help anyone, let's talk about this in a constructive way.

To quote Dr. Piggy, "Twitter justice doesn't work." Bluesky justice doesn't work. For everyone's safety and well-being, we need an organization like Splat Safety. I hope that at least this is something we can agree on.

Please take the time today to listen to the TO's and other community leaders who are speaking about their experiences today, there have been many times their voices do not get the attention and respect they deserve and we have lost too many people good people already, I'd like to not lose more.

If the community is so quick to dogpile on anyone who is out of line or makes a genuine mistake, which organization will be next? It happened to Dapple this last week, it's happened to IPL, whose to say it won't happen again? We're expected to gain the trust of a community that we can't trust. (3/3)
saminospl.splstrong.com
The community's utter negligence, careless spread of misinformation, and lack of a willingness to exercise due diligence and look at the case for what it truly is disappoints me.

Without Splat Safety, organizers are going to burn out so fast. The community is now actively driving TOs away. (2/3)
saminospl.splstrong.com
After the community's reaction to Splat Safety's post, it's incredibly demotivating to want to continue doing community work. I'm passionate about what I do, but much of the joy has been sucked out. It's hard to trust a community that's so quick to judge without considering the implications. (1/3)

All of this because the community trusted an incomplete story and so much hate was generated that someone decided an appropriate response would be to commit crimes. SSC isn't perfect, IPL isn't perfect, I'm not perfect, nobody is perfect. But we all genuinely try to do the right thing.

I might just stop TOing after I'm done with my upcoming responsibilities.

The players act like we get paid to be here and don't thank us basically ever when we work at least 3 hours (often more) every edition to give you a fun, fair, and safe tournament experience to the BEST OF OUR ABILITY. (1/3)

It truly is important for competitive splatoon players to know they've earned less than nothing and are lucky anyone bothers doing anything for them anymore. Unfortunately for the TO and staff side of things, we like the game as well 😵‍💫
