i accidentally made a game about 5th graders beating each other up in a card game during recess: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3087810/Recesses/
Pinned
man, someone should really make a game about how miserable/hopeless it is to be a kid right now.

maybe wrap the deeper message in a cutesy card game, maybe have fifth graders discuss society/capitalism/human existence on the playground at school...

oh.

It's recess. Time to play cards, find your missing friend, discover the meaning of life. The usual 5th grade playground stuff.

Man, how many hidden boss battles do you think this one bad-boy (and four bad-crystals) have inspired over the past 30 years? What a legend!

Reminder that you can make your own videos games.

They won't be AAA level or whatever

But they'll have what you personally want and that's what matters.

I love it when I get a new idea for an update to my game that I know will take weeks to implement and less than 1% of players will ever see... but my brain makes me have to do it anyway 🥲

I will be going live in just a few minutes as we host an Indie Spotlight stream for the indie game Recesses by @sanjuny.bsky.social! The developer has given us 3 Steam keys of the game to giveaway - all you have to do is enter is speak in the Twitch chat. twitch.tv/midwestgameguy

I have tried to play Ocarina of Time four times... and each time I always stopped playing at Jabu Jabu 🥲
Now I'm curious to see how folks answer the opposite: What's a game everyone loves or even says is a masterpiece, but you just couldn't like no matter how much you tried.

Small, free act you can do to bring some good in this world: add positive reviews to ALL you Steam games, especially the small indies. You don't need to write anything smart, just "game good" is enough. Every positive steam review tips the algorithm and helps your fav artists get more sales

Personally, I think more games should have 5th graders settling philosophical arguments over society, Capitalism, and/or human existence over playground card-game duels 😆
You know how much I love my card battling games so I tried out Recesses! 🚀🎴

In this first impressions, watch me:
👾Play a game I don't want to because my friend went missing
👾Push my opponents into black holes
👾Learn about the social construct of cheating from a girl who stole my chicken nuggies

Maybe I'm crazy but I think Pokémon Red/Blue has not only one of the best stories in Pokemon games, but in ALL games.

The starter decision that affects your entire game, the environmental storytelling from step one, the rivalry buildup to twist climax, the grounded antagonists, just... incredible!😍

My game, Cardaire, and Isle of Swaps have teamed up to make a discounted pack of our single-player card games!

What TCG player doesn't love getting some 3-for-1 value?? Big thanks to @eternalskies.neocities.org for the idea

don't become so systems-brained you forget about the things that REALLY matter in an rpg... like reprising the title theme during the final boss fight

I feel like a lot of games advertise themselves as being inspired by Chrono Trigger but then they aren't actually very much like Chrono Trigger at all. I think it's because Chrono Trigger was about stuff and these games are about how fun it was to play Chrono Trigger.

My approach to game development is to look at all the things that make a game popular and deliberately not doing any of them.

Reviewing a book like a game:

"The gorgeous fontstyle and heart-pounding chapter titles more than make up for the lackluster story and mostly-derivative bookread. 4/5 stars, must-buy-at-launch for fans of Tolkien-lites."

Ohhh yess, have not had a game satiate my brain like a big juicy cheeseburger in a long time, but this one did.

Big recommend if you're a fan of surreal imagery, abstract ideas, and/or 1960s Romanian stop-motion animations that ponder existence.
