If I was the commander in chief of the Imperial hegemon I would simply not dismantle the network of military and diplomatic alliances, favourable trade deals, and broad cultural paramountcy that had made my nation the most wealthy and powerful the world has ever seen.

The Kremlins would of course scream bloody murder and issue bloodcurdling threats, just like they have done so far. And do their best to destabilize Europe, just like they have done so far.
But invasion and conquest would be off the table.

Of course, a quick solution would be for France to sell some warheads. That too is very unlikely to happen soon.
But IMHO the cheapest and most reliable way to contain the Kremlin threat would be to donate about 20-30 warheads to every Eastern Flank country, the Baltics especially.
