It was a privilege to interview @gabrielfinkelstein.bsky.social for @awaisaftab.bsky.social’s Psychiatry on the Margins, where we discuss the 19th C scientist Emil Du Bois-Raymond’s famous dictum regarding consciousness: “Ignoramus et ignorabimus“, or “we are ignorant and we will remain ignorant.”

I am writing about how the screenwriter of Taxi Driver has made a film in the transcendental style, which Ibelieve can elicit an experience akin to a secular religious experience.

Work music (Car Bomb, Meshuggah) meets home (Eliane Radigue, Glenn Gould). And yes, Natalie Portman.

It might or might not - it's all relative to traditions, and bear in mind that some traditions may have their own idea of "false visions" or similar. It's never a simple as what the believer believes.

Take the Pope's view of Medugorje for example

You'd have to narrow down different kinds of "religious experience" and whether they entail specific claims and actions about the world, rather than being a general sense of wellbeing (or otherwise).

This morning I'm thinking about the question: what if, any implications does the history of religious, or mystical experience have for contemporary psychotherapy?

What do you think is of an example of political insanity that lead to near universal good results?

On 10 grams of mushrooms I felt what can only be described as unconditional love and the sense that this was the true universal spirit. I was literally crying with joy. Was it a religious experience or just a massive serotonin dump…dunno, but I’ve been sober since and changed my life for the better🤷‍♂️

Yes, many. And as a longtime contemplative (meditator) and student of world religion, it's increasingly evident to me that honesty is the "path" to such experience. Put lyrically —

There's a miracle going on, there really is, and it's everything.

I forgot about Drugstore Cowboy. Shame on me. And now that I think about it, nobody has mentioned Sid and Nancy yet. Shame on all of us.
