An opinion I pretty firmly hold is that everyone should make a song, paint a painting, act in something, and write a book even if all of those things end up being objectively terrible

I'm grateful Alan Dershowitz has lived long enough to learn that Woody Allen and Jeffrey Epstein were ridiculing him behind his back.

It's really important for people to internalize that, in the eyes of Washington DC's foreign policy establishment, the biggest sin of the Obama presidency was concluding a deal with Iran that objectively satisfied the demands that Washington DC pretends to believe in.

I'm well aware of the Washington Post's gruesome flaws, but this specifically makes me sad. As a kid I learned how to read in general and how to read newspapers specifically from the Washington Post's sports section.

Donald Graham didn't just sell the Washington Post to Jeff Bezos, who is merrily dismantling it today. Before that Graham let Mark Zuckerberg out of an agreement for the Post to buy 10 percent of Facebook for $6 million. Today that 10 percent would be worth $175 billion.

It's still incredible to me that ICE believes they can murder U.S. citizens in broad daylight with no consequences. Who do they think they are, the IDF?

so I'm about halfway through my re-read of "the rise and fall of the third reich," world war 2 is about to kick off, and one notable thing is how many times hitler would start off speeches and meetings talking about how badly he/germany had been treated, usually by countries he planned on crushing

This is a weird & unappreciated fact about the people at the top of the world in every situation. If you read leaked government documents, you'll see they say pretty much the same thing in private as in public. They're true believers, which is scarier than them being genius lying supervillains.

Trump hates the Iraqi politician Nouri al-Maliki. Donald Rumsfeld also hated al-Maliki, whom he privately disparaged as "not Syngman Rhee." In 1948 Syngman Rhee, then-dictator of South Korea, supervised the slaughter of over 100,000 South Koreans in the space of a few weeks.

Tony Dokoupil recently criticized the old CBS, saying it "put too much weight in the analysis of academics or elites & not enough on you [ie, regular Americans]." This explains why CBS just hired Niall Ferguson, who's British, a professor at Stanford & a hedge fund consultant.

One of the sharpest minds just hired by CBS is Niall Ferguson. Just after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Ferguson declared "I am a fully paid-up member of the neoimperialist gang."

One of the hardest things to do is bring campaign-level communications to the work of governance, and snowstorms are notoriously one of the biggest litmus tests that less-engaged voters use to judge mayoral administrations. This is an excellent way to communicate.
