The 3 Rs are the big ones: rate, review, recommend. Even short reviews help, wherever you bought the book or any online store. Some will let you review without a purchase. If a store or library doesn't have the book you wamt request it

Everything else is a more systemic change

Don't front-load your work with unnecessary backstory and intricate worldbuilding. Give your readers only as much as they need to engage with the plot and characters, and let them discover the rest as and when they need it...

Break up long paragraphs. Dense blocks of text can tire readers. Shorter paragraphs add pace, clarity, and breathing room, making it easier to follow shifts in action, thought, or emotion.

Struggling for book ideas?

Ideas often start with a puzzle. Notice something that doesn’t quite make sense and explore it.

Does something makes you pause, wonder, or feel uneasy. Strong reactions often point toward stories worth writing.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 86: You don't have to go far to get ideas. They're everywhere around you. What you need is to train your mind to see the familiar in a new and unfamiliar way. Change angles. Play with perspective. Take tired tropes and wake them up.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 26800:
Querying is a slow, anxious process. Don't make it worse by stopping work. Start something new. Have fun with it. At worst, having a new project will take the sting out of rejection. At best, you'll have a second half-finished book when your first is accepted.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 6:
The trad publishing industry has many flaws. But if you want to be part of it, you have to understand it. That means: gatekeeping; filling in forms; accepting editorial advice. Don't blame the system if you don't get exactly what you want. Embrace it, or step away.
