Here's the thing: volunteering is about finding a need and then helping to fill it. It's not primarily about you.

If you're hunting for specific activities to do once a year so you can feel you've "done your part" then YOU are the one in need, looking for other people's suffering to fill you up.
DO NOT call up the homeless shelter on thanksgiving or Xmas to see if you can pass a few plates and show your kids the “reason for the season”

The homeless shelter is not a petting zoo of human tragedy! The homeless shelter is not a drive thru nativity scene for you to enjoy!

I see everyone saying the rich should climb Mount Everest

but unfortunately Mt Everest is no longer that deadly. So consider: Annapurna in the winter months. Or an unguided ascent of the matterhorn.
People should stop climbing mt everest

I don't know what — or really, if anything — in Lizza's account is true, because I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. If *any* of it is true, the fact that we are only hearing about it now, after the fact, to drive subscriptions to his paywalled private newsletter, is frankly vile!

if there's a reason to keep up the "tribunals for all involved" discourse one such reason it is to put in stark relief how far away some of the Dem politicking is from the mood on the ground
eric swalwell said on msnow that a major goal of a dem majority after the midterms would be for ice masks to come off and badges to come out, this is insufficient

I've noticed that folks who fight deportations/ICE detentions often express a ton of shame that they didn't do more. And I just want to say:

1. This is a pretty normal emotion
2. Doing *anything* is better than doing *nothing*
3. We are not the people who should feel ashamed.

My hot take is that over the next 10 years, we're going to see more emphasis on and investment in the humanities at Ivy League and other fancy schools just as state schools and small privates continue to decimate and even eliminate the humanities.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe
"The humanities really are a resource — a confidence for living in our times.” Dean Sara Guyer on the modern utility of humanities degrees

well, I read it, and the salient, non-gross part is Lizza alleging, midsentence and without elaboration, that Nuzzi ran numerous “catch-and-kill operations” on RFK’s behalf, which would give her a role in both his appointment and the untold preventable deaths he has abetted in office. Cool.

Honestly most upset that the FBI is characterizing courtwatchers as "anarchists." Only some of us are anarchists. Some of us are also socialists!
A “joint situational information report” from the FBI and the New York police department (NYPD), dated 28 August 2025, quoted from a chat on Signal, the encrypted messaging app, and also characterized the court watchers as “anarchist violent extremist actors.”

Exclusive: Agency accessed private conversations of New York ‘courtwatch’ group that was observing public hearings
