Blessed are the frogs, for they keep making authoritarians look incredibly stupid
Three persons in inflatable frog costumes. One of them is holding a nicely painted sign with two little cartoon frogs holding hands, below the text "FROGS TOGETHER STRONG"

Encouraged by the example of MIT, I wrote today to the new president of UT-Austin, my alma mater, to ask him to reject Trump's foolish and authoritarian "compact."

For other UT alums, Jim Davis's e-mail is [email protected].
Email to president@utexas.edu. Subject: President Trump's Compact.

Dear President Davis,

Good morning. I'm a two-time graduate of UT-Austin (BA English 1989, PhD American Studies 2003). My parents are both UT grads. I've been a visiting professor at the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, and I'm a Life Member of the Texas Exes. I'm a proud, multigenerational Longhorn.

I'd like to ask you urgently to reject President Trump's harmful and illegal "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education."

As I'm sure you know, MIT has already rejected the compact, and no doubt many other respected institutions will do so soon.

Free inquiry and academic freedom are critical to the success and proper functioning of any university, and it would be tragic if UT-Austin were to sacrifice its long tradition of academic excellence by submitting to an unconstitutional and autocratic demand from the White House. It is simply not the president's right or role to dictate to any university what its faculty can teach, say, or research. He must be resisted.

The UT community, and you as its leader, should stand firm against the president's direct challenge to the integrity of the University and to the prestige of the degrees we earned there.

Please reject this outrageous assault on academic freedom and the University's most deeply held values.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Bryan Edward Stone, Ph.D.

Experimenting with a new concept using @queermedieval.bsky.social’s Portland Frog woodcut. Embracing goofiness as protest.
A poster in green ink on off white paper. In the center is a woodcut style illustration of a protester wearing an inflatable frog costume standing up against two ICE agents. The text above and below reads:

Thanks. I’ve had it for not quite 2 years & so almost all of my errands on it. I love that it’s purple!

Austin folks know where this is, but for the rest of y’all, I rode my trike to Wheatsville Co-op South. Got the obligatory photo-op w/the 🦖. (I know @americanfietser.bsky.social likes to see pics of bikes out and about, taking care of business.)
A photo of my purple e-trike. It has an orange & pink Day of the Dead themed grocery bag in the back basket. It is on the sidewalk in front of a store. Just behind it is a very large green cartoon dinosaur statue wearing my lavender bike helmet.
The dinosaur is a relative of the famous Mangiasaurus, that roamed North Austin back in the day. The South Austin cousin is smaller.

Hello, humans! ‘Heirloom,’ my third album for @nonesuch.com, is out today. The LP documents a piano concerto I wrote for my father, Jeffrey Kahane. It’s a very personal piece—something of an aural family scrapbook. I'd be delighted if you were to give it a spin!

I have a day off! My plans: cycle to Wheatsville Co-op; plant parsley & dill; read (Samantha Irby’s “Quietly Hostile Essays”); play fun harp tunes on the porch.

I’ve already done the Wordle which, tbh, I should have gotten in fewer tries! 🤔

Home from the Symphony of the Hills season opener in Kerrville, TX. We began w/the Adagietto from Mahler 5 in memory of those lost in the floods. (I grew up there; this was very personal.) I played well & only cried a little. If you know the piece, the F major chord at measure 72 was my undoing.😥

Lol! Yes, it is unfair. When teatime rolls around and we are getting peckish, out come the tortilla chips. (Usually w/salsa.) Texas is a bit of a Hellmouth at the moment, but we have this food group right. Also breakfast tacos.
shanahipharpy.bsky.social
Hmm. Own-goal there, my friend. Crispy/salty, as a food group, can’t be ignored. Of course, I live in a world where chips + salsa, guacamole, or queso is a lifestyle.

Completely non-political good news:

The Martin guitar company is reissuing its 00-DB Jeff Tweedy model. I got a used one of these from the original run–number 993 to be precise. Lovely sound. A much better guitar than I am a player.

Now there will be more of them making sweet music. How grand!
