"I have an idea for a blog post, I'll just quickly sketch what I'm thinking" <- this is a trap, do not fall for it!

(got sucked into a fugue state, and now here I am, 4 hours later, wondering why there's so much other stuff I still need to get done today...)

TIL that the guy who runs the NYT today is actually the great-grandson of the guy who ran it during WWII, where their stance was basically: "reporting on the holocaust would make us look biased"

Despite threats, billionaires don't leave the largest population centers, because it's where there is the most money to be had from the collective value generated by human beings, and despite what they insist, they don't generate wealth; they collect it.

finally got around to reading this paper: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

beyond just the conclusions (which are really interesting!), it's really cool to see the care that was taken to establish that the authors weren't measuring a different effect that could lead to the same results
The social media discourse of engaged partisans is toxic even when politics are irrelevant
Abstract. Prevailing theories of partisan incivility on social media suggest that it derives from disagreement about political issues or from status compet

this is a really really good article
The right, along the Roberts Court, is trying to nullify the Reconstruction amendments guaranteeing equality under the law, in order to restore the Antebellum Constitution, which envisions “liberty” as an eternal aristocracy of race and class (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

this is such a good piece of writing, really cannot recommend it enough
I wrote much less this year than I've written in the past five, so there's not a whole lot to revisit. This piece, though, I still think is probably the best article I've ever written, even if it was a dumb professional move to write it [free to read] www.patreon.com/posts/empero...

The older I get, the more my politics mature from childish, naïve beliefs like "the world is complicated and leaders have to make hard decisions" to more serious, adult principles like "hurting people is bad and helping people is good."

feel like the people who think things need images even if they don't have any good images to illustrate their point, are coterminous with people who think they should say/present/etc things even when they have nothing useful to say

i would like it if there was less stuff that was more worthwhile
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

The function of the waffles joke is an in-group signifier. Singal, Graber, and Oppiliappan are showing in-group solidarity; they're all in on a joke. The joke is they have institutional power, and you don't, and they feel contempt for you, that you still want to have opinions about how power's used.

This, from the Quakers, is a pretty good example of how to resist pressure from bigot lobbying groups. Effectively “we legally can allow trans people to use the loo, we morally should, and we tried it and nothing bad happened”

It's surprising, sometimes, that we really are the same people as those humans thousands of years ago
