that's right. humanities and arts teachers we need to see the frame and decide whether what we're being given is GOOD and meaningful. it's not the essay that matters. it's the essay insofar as it makes a space for prolonged thought--for changing one's mind. and there are lots of ways to do that
There was a widely circulating article this weekend about film students who supposedly won't watch an entire film. If this is the case - and I think the article probably overstates things - then we need to teach the skill that's meaningful (attention to a film). Maybe this different than before...
