This is an important point.

Empathy—in and of itself—is anti-fascist.

The arts—and the project of higher education as a whole—teach empathy, enabling you to put yourself in other people’s shoes.

So to a fascist, they must be destroyed.
The war on empathy and the war on the arts are part of the same project.

Trump: “Dear Prime Minister Carney:

Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.

Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Carney said what critical voices - and most of the non-West - have being saying for years: the rules-based order is structurally unjust and unequal - and is decaying as a result.

Carney didn't say anything new. But he has granted the mainstream the ability to voice & accept this reality.

Damn, that's a good speech.

I've got a lot of thoughts to sort out about this, as I prepare to give a talk on the crisis of international order at @queenspols.bsky.social next week - my inaugural lecture as the Hardy Chair of Political Science.

I *might* come back here and share some later.
This is one of the sharpest analyses of international affairs that I've heard from a Canadian leader - or any national leader - in a long time. And I suspect he wrote the main bits himself. paulwells.substack.com/p/the-carney...

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.
