the thing with Chesterton’s fence is it’s never invoked ingenuously: it’s always someone trying to get us to play “let’s pretend we don’t know why this fence is here” because they know it would reflect poorly on them to outright admit that they like the fence

trying to find a post from an old car-driving/weightlifting forum - they were asking for help transitioning from curls at the traffic lights to benchpresses on the highway. most of the answers were suggesting more gradual steps but there was one really interesting one.
