Another aspect to ICE / CBP and protest violence I haven’t seen: recruitment propaganda imagery and rhetoric, as well as who it targets.

DHS makes a concerted effort to appeal to a very specific recruit pool group; accusations about “politicizing” immigration protests should start with them.

The objective here is to divide the population via chaos and erosion of faith in institutions, incite cycles of revenge violence, and finally, to step in and take control of government once the populace is worn down enough by to the point they will accept any leadership that promises security.

Incoming thread about CBP, ICE, the violence in Portland and Minneapolis, plus NSPM-7, white supremacist accelerationism, and why this all matters.

It’s a bigger, more dire fascist situation that’s we all need to confront — which demands more info and context than “all the same Gestapo shit”

Bluesky: where people get pissed at me for providing accurate information to call attention to an even bigger fascist situation we should be taking action against
Here’s another reason why it matters — it shows the intent of the federal government vis-a-vis political dissent.

In other words, sending THIS arm of fascists pretty clearly proves the purpose of NSPM-7 is treating protest as terrorism and is unrelated to immigration.

The number of Gestapo in Germany was 32,000. The population was 70 million. That's one Gestapo for every 2200 citizens.

The number of ICE agents is 20,000. The population of the US is 348 million. That's one ICE agent for every 17,000 citizens.

There are more of us.

I contend that they aren’t manufacturing evidence to convince people in reasoned and logical argument. They are manufacturing props to be used in a fantasy performance among people who collectively agree with the make-believe narrative of that performance.

I think this distinction matters because despite the sophistication of evidence-forging tools people who want to know the truth can still get to the heart of the matter and make that widely known, but the culture of participatory performative lying doesn’t require any tools at all—just bullshit.

The role that AI and deepfakes play in this frame is not as technical tools that disable our ability to make evidentiary claims. Rather, they exist as props that can be used by participants engaged in collective make-believe or play-acting who perform a fantasy reality for their audiences.

In light of the Wired article describing people misusing AI to identify the ICE agent who murdered Renee Good, and the debate about AI supposedly destroying our ability to use images as evidence, I’m coming down on the side that the real problem is a widespread culture of performative confabulation.
I have a contrary take. The ability to use evidence to make veridical claims about reality was a rare skill requiring training for scientists & investigators. The abundance of digital media convinced many people they had that skill when all they had was an excess of data and AI only exacerbated that

Yes. The point of outright lies contradicting what we can all see isn't to convince anyone in a genuine debate, it is to assist their confederates in creating enough noise, they hope, to bring the truth into doubt for those who aren't going to review the evidence.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a question about the intended /purpose/ of "ICE are learning from the IDF." Are you simply highlighting links between two criminal organisations? Or are you suggesting that American cops wouldn't murder people without Israeli example?

I can believe they have looked at their tactics, repurposed them for domestic aims. I also think that anyone who thinks this is, like, ideologically significant is lost in the sauce at minimum.

it is broadly speaking very hard for me to believe any theory that suggests america has learned how to do a bad thing from Israel because that would be the first time in history that america has learned anything from a smaller country

so after being bedridden for 16months due to a hernia, I've finally got my surgery!
now I'm bedridden for recovery, which is at least a great improvement.
I'm still broke though, so if you've got a couple dollars, it'd help me get through this last stretch. Thanks so much!

Pathologic 3 is out tomorrow - I'm very confident that this one is going to be a gem, given that the two (very different) demos were both equally excellent.

Also a perfectly fine place for people to start. It's one third of a three-parallel-part remake of the original Pathologic.

My solution was to use the expression "It's [...] pure juice" (pur jus), which does exist commonly in France, because it allowed translating "it's sparkling [...]" into "it's [...] concentrate" (du [...] à base de concentré). While losing the original pedantry, it retains the meaning.

Today while translating a quote by @taliabhatt.itch.io I ironically discovered that while the "It's only [...] when it comes from the [...] region of France" meme is definitely about France, it's very hard to translate into French without adding a footnote to explain the original meme.
