Reading this after reading the @nytimes.com piece on Trump Allies nearing "total victory" in wiping out U.S. climate regulation....

(Also, I must've been under a rock, but I thought WaPo killed their "Democracy Dies in Darkness" slogan last year? When did they bring it back?)

The latest AI freelancer scam, caught by @soleilho.com. As the real Scott Nover says in this piece, credibility is everything for journalists: "When our credibility is undermined or eroded, our jobs — which require us to convey factual information — become much, much harder.”

Great summary of one person's obscene wealth and the things they prioritize. Thinking about how much Melania made from this deal vs the WaPo reporter who was just fired in the middle of a warzone.

Anyway. "Number of years Bezos could absorb those losses with what he makes in a single week: 5"

Our founders, though deeply flawed, understood that democracy requires an informed citizenry and a government accountable to it people. That’s why the press is the only profession protected by the Constitution. It’s also why autocrats and oligarchs seek to control and destroy it.

Normal people are out there doing extraordinary things. My mom's health aide emailed me: ICE took 2 of her neighbors; when she told them they weren't welcome, she was met w/a rifle. Now she's driving a neighbor to work hidden in the back of her car & escorting the neighbor's kids to the bus stop.
“If I am killed doing this, throw my body at the White House, martyr the shit out of me & raise hell. Do not be sad. Do not think I would do anything differently. I would do it over & over again — this is too important to sit down & shut up and not do anything.” www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

It's unbelievable how many things still leave me speechless with anger and sadness during these unfathomable times.

Laid off by a prestigious and once highly respected publication in the middle of a warzone is the latest.
A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world

"The person you see in your mind lying in that street is still a child. I’m sure his mother feels that way, too, or she sees him at every age all at once, including those he did not live to see."

Devastating.
"I didn’t realize, in the hours before his name was released to the public, that the man millions of people had seen lying facedown on the pavement from multiple angles of eyewitness video was my childhood best friend."

This piece by @jonrauch.bsky.social is very much worth reading. (Yes, I know, even if your reaction to the title is, "Gee, you don't say!") He lays out the case more carefully, clearly, and systematically than I have seen elsewhere.

Until recently, I thought it a term best avoided. But now, the resemblances are too many and too strong to deny.

I'd rather not quote him, but moderates and the right need to hear his message and fury. "They are unprofessional pathetic COWARDS. Because if...an 18-year-old Marine did that in Iraq in the middle of a war zone, he would be court martialed, because it would be MURDER...You guys are criminal thugs."
Seth Moulton is nobody's idea of a left-wing Dem.

(Four-tour USMC veteran of Iraq; multi-term Congressman from MA; now running against Ed Markey for Senate this year.)

The righteous fury in this message is how decent Americans should feel.

I can not even begin to overstate how gobsmackingly shocked I continue to be (despite everything that's happened over the past decade and especially this past year) at the complete and absolute depravity, corruption, and unequivocal lack of moral decency, integrity, and humanity we are witnessing.
A lot of self described Christians seem to be banking on there not actually being a hell.

I actually find these figures incredibly depressing and deeply unsettling that it still has this much support.
YouGov is out with a new poll after ICE killed another person in Minnesota today. Abolishing ICE is now +5 among all adults, and **+12 among independents**

This is one that stands out:

I hope Democratic senators and congressmen understand, out of pure lizard-brain self-interest if moral decency happens to be unavailable, what is at stake for them if they don't handle this the right way. This is a true "If not now, when?" moment.

Research shows that more diverse juries are less quick to convict, and that they deliberate longer and more carefully.

A landmark reform by Governor Phil Murphy on Sunday will make the jury pool in New Jersey a lot more representative of the state.
In a Final Act, New Jersey Governor Opens Jury Service to Thousands with Convictions
New Jersey has been one of the harshest states in banning people with records from juries. Murphy’s order restores eligibility to over 300,000, but stops short of permanent change.
