When I moved out there in 1997, I had no intention of even pretending to be a Mariners fan. I’ve been a Cubs fan since I was a little girl. But that group of guys was hard not to fall in love with, so the Ms have been my other team since then.

Oh, for sure. Cubs-Mariners WS would simultaneously be my fondest baseball dream and my worst baseball nightmare. If neither of my teams makes it to their league CS, I'll be rooting for the Blue Jays.

I mean, some of the Swedish names -- I totally get why they just accept the fact that they're going to be Americanized. But Liljegren deciding to *ask* people to do it after all this time is just never going to not baffle me.

But Liljegren isn't all that hard to say fairly correctly & the way people were saying it when he was with the Leafs was pretty close (the 'e' sound is the trickiest bit), so why ask people to completely butcher it after all these years?

Lol. I was just thinking about the song "One Piece at a Time" this morning, before I saw this lunacy. From anyone else, that song would have been considered a novelty song. I suppose, strictly speaking, it still was even from Cash, but somehow he pulls it off.

I lived in the region he's from (Skåne) and it's definitely not a weird regional variation or anything (and Skånska is probably the weirdest dialect of Swedish there is).

As someone who used to speak Swedish pretty well, I'd like someone to crack the mystery of why Timothy Liljegren asked everybody to start pronouncing his surname wrong after several years of people pronouncing it reasonably close to correctly.
