underappreciated how many people *lost the ability to read* things of any length after the 2016 election. Including me! It took a couple years for me to stop feeling like my brain was tearing itself apart in anything approaching silence

… and not because anything “got better”
i got tired of "how to read more" advice from people who are book critics and don't own tvs and live in monasteries with no wifi, so here is some advice from someone with a terminal case of internet brain www.shesabeast.co/how-to-read-...

"If you are earning $80,000 with $79,000 in fixed costs, you are not stable. You are super-cooled water. One shock—a transmission failure, a broken arm—and you freeze instantly."

We love an economist who arrives at leftist theory from first principles
This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

studies are showing that building and running llm data factories causes more pollution and harm than burning them down once

Everyone knows data centers use a ton of water.

What hardly anyone knows: they can poison the water that remains.

And in eastern Oregon, Amazon is doing exactly that.
AI’s water problem is worse than we thought
A new investigation reveals how Amazon is amplifying Oregon’s nitrate pollution crisis.

I don't think we should drain the planet's drinkable water and build data centers that poison poor communities so people who are too lazy to put work into their lives can make shitty images or pretend they're talking to a real person

Literally all of society hates this abominable scam homunculus and the weird little death cult bubble of vampiric losers who spewed it forth upon the world. Take a break from bragging about how gullible you are and give yourself a swirlie and stuff yourself in a locker and sort yourself out.

That is the main objection to LLMs. It is the technological extension of James' theory on assholes: A technology of little use, that few people actually want, being pushed on them by people who get mad when you complain about it.

In a survey of 30 homes, at least 25 miscarriages and a half dozen people living with one kidney were reported.

I think Demonschool is a good video game but I think Brandon’s approach to how staff worked together and were credited REALLY deserves a lot of attention. Video game crediting is a stupid black box and transparency will help average people understand these roles.
demonschool credits all 145 people who touched the game over the course of its multi-year dev cycle AND explains what exactly they contributed. the rest of the games industry, which commonly omits people from credits entirely, should be taking notes

Every great product, once it's established itself as a primary operator in its market, is deliberately made worse and worse by its provider in pursuit of greater profit and exploitation of the consumer. I don't know how we can observe this process & still believe in the rationality of capitalism.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea
