One thing that I keep in mind is that Vancouver is a young city and our traditions seems more malleable than other places, but you must forgive me for being skeptical that new traditions will cement themselves given the inescapable alienation of this era of capitalism.
You can like or dislike fireworks, enjoy the post-show exodus from downtown or abhor the crowds, but the Celebration of Light is probably the biggest event that celebrates Vancouver's Vancouverness.

They heard from hundreds of Vancouverites, many of whom were home- and business-owners who said “please don’t freeze my property tax. I like parks and libraries more,” and they still went through with this budget that is (at best) 1/10 the size of a normal one.

I'm so glad I finished my technical writing program just before the AI bubble started expanding. Seeing classmates and program instructors talk about it on LinkedIn (I know...) makes me think I would've made it one semester tops if I had to do it today.
