Confusingly, I consider sidescrolling beat em ups to be a totally different thing, which are actually one of the best types of games that can be made ever. Check out Ninja Warriors on SNES and Mad Stalker on X68K/Genesis

Like IDK I think you'll find that almost all "good" 3D action games that either weren't informed by Souls, or predate it entirely, also had robust dodge and/or parry mechanics, and in general relied pretty heavily on cues and reaction (kind of inextricable, if we're being serious).

Spot on I think. To me the outspoken aversion to dodge rolls and parries feels like if you tried to say all those mediocre GOW clones from back in the day were bad because of "juggles"

It's gone too far and I need to speak out: KZOK is no longer a "classic rock" station. "Classic rock" as a radio format begins with the Beatles and ends with GnR. It's not that hard to fuck up. I should not be hearing Bush and Foo Fighters on the classic rock station.
