I work at the University of Toronto (but speak only for myself). I love the heck out of my two kids and my wife. In between, I write. He/him

I think the left needs to start coming up with its own online seminars and courses that anyone can join. If Jordan Peterson and Richard Spencer have them, so should we. We can't rely on the academy anymore.

"Pirates" is too romantic and cool a term for these clowns. They want to abuse Marxist and Communist ideas to justify stealing to benefit themselves at the expense of authors?

Let's start calling them kulaks.
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

Doug Ford is the same guy he always was - a mean-spirited, selfish bully. I have never forgiven or forgotten what he said as a councillor about developmentally disabled kids, when he fought against a group home for them in a neighbourhood in his ward. On a fundamental level, he's not a good person.
It really has been interesting the last while to see Doug Ford's outbursts. The true Ford. From "get a job" to "audit orgs that might support left wing causes". The authoritarian belligerent bully that had no staff to muzzle him in City Hall days is still there. Does Ontario see? Do they care?

Edwin Booth was by most metrics the best Booth. The no-good, extremely racist, Confederacy-loving assassin brother was clearly the worst Booth. Junius Brutus Booth Senior, Junius Junior, and sister Asia (she didn't act) fall in between.
My BBS handle back in the day was "EdwinBooth," named for a famous ancestor who was the greatest actor of his generation and who did NOT assassinate a beloved president, unlike his no-good brother of whom we do not speak.

In addition to being a fascinating (if horrific) insight into a mostly-unknown period of European prehistory, this includes a BANGER of a quote: "I can see why all these people without heads wouldn’t be good for a community, and might be a cause for abandonment."

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who's coming to save you?

I'm doomed, but it'll be delicious!

(That's the contestants on Season 9 of the Great Canadian Baking Show, for those who aren't familiar.)

Bigger than this, I think people should be more skeptical of online leftism that says, "Actually, under capitalism I don't owe other people anything." Oh, your communal philosophy says you can be interpersonally vicious and steal from other people? How convenient!
Always worth taking a moment to remind you if you’re pirating authors’ book you’re a shitty person. You can rail that our profession isn’t a profession all you want. You can paint yourself as an online revolutionary liberating ideas. It’s all bullshit.

You’re just a shitty person who hates writers.

Prime Minister, who made the comments at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, has placed less emphasis on feminist policies than the Trudeau government

It’s pretty remarkable how in a minority government situation, Carney forces budget votes without offering olive branches to other parties then repeatedly takes positions like this that are alienating to his base and own Liberal MPs

It's a great movie. Sexy, smart, and there isn't enough working class noir. See it if you haven't.

(Also, in 1996, I didn't notice or appreciate that Gershon's character has that double-headed axe tattoo; nice touch.)

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, when we honour the memory of the people who've lost their lives due to transphobic violence and oppression.

Transphobia is a vicious bigotry and an eliminationist ideology that must be entirely dismantled. No more lives lost because of transphobia!

Unrelated, but springboarding off Charlie Jane's post, I've always been grimly amused that Save The Cat - a pernicious book - has a LENGTHY digression in a SHORT book about how bad the movie Memento is, justifying this view by saying the movie was a gimmick AND didn't make much money.
I have been gaslit by a book of writing advice.

When I was a teen I liked John Updike (I know!) until I read a writing advice book called Writing Well by Donald Hall, which included a chapter explaining why Updike was bad.

I've found copies of Writing Well, but none include the Updike takedown.

My most woke? How much time do you have?

We START with universal basic services. Everyone gets the health care, child care, food, housing, public transit, education, and access to information they need to thrive. Maybe money can still exist, just for treats and perks. But no one should NEED it.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

I've mostly been reading ebooks lately, via the library app on my phone, and it's been great Convenient! Portable!

But now I feel like I miss holding a book. I never stopped *acquiring* books, so I have a big print TBR pile. I'm going to prioritize that for the rest of 2025 and into the new year.

RE starbucks picket line--the relevant detail is "picket line, do not cross." Pass that along. Proclaiming that you are in no danger of doing so because you are too aesthetically pure to let Starbucks coffee pass your lips is...unhelpful and does not give the impression you perhaps imagine it does.
