Moldy Oldie #2! A "Magnificent Rando" from 2014 that still makes me giggle. A lone hiker gets existential about an ant he just stepped on.
Panel 1: Close-up of an ant minding its own business, doing ant things. Panel 2: WHUMP! Out of nowhere, a hiker's boot flattens the ant. Panel 3: The hiker thinks to himself, "...why did I kill that ant? I just as easily could have walked over it..." Panel 4: His train of thought continues, "But now it's dead, simply on my whim...I bet other ants in the colony depended on this one. I wonder if they'll notice she's gone, or miss her. Do ants even have feelings?" Panel 5: Medium shot of the hiker deep in thought, "Regardless, I shouldn't just crush other living things because I can. You never have to worry about bothering someone when commenting "I like your characters" or "I like your work." We love it. However... there's a good chance a writer/artist explodes into a thousand glowing rainbow confetti bits. Otherwise known as Validation Induced Exploding Syndrome. Very common.

I'm calling this upcoming series of posts "Moldy Oldies", ancient comics of mine that haven't seen the light of day in many years and need airing out in the sun. Behold! The very first appearance of Leora, from 2014.
This comic is called 101 Creative Uses for a Pencil. It's a top down, left to right text orientation with six images contained in a cloud-like thought bubble, and two lower panels surrounded by straight boxes. In the large thought bubble, which represents someone brainstorming ideas for what to do with a pencil, each image shows a creative way to use a pencil. The last one, however, is suddenly quite disturbing. Someone shouts the teacher's name and we realize that this brainstorming session was occurring in an elementary school classroom where two children, a boy and a girl, are grouped with Pinhead from Hellraiser (of all people). Why, I cannot say, but he's there looking out of place. The boy informs the teacher that Pinhead is creeping them out again, and the teacher with appropriate irritation admonishes Pinhead and directs him to go to the principal's office. The last and smallest panel in the bottom right corner zooms in on the little girl's sullen and disappointed expression. She secretly relates to Pinhead. What follows is the text of the comic: 101 Creative Uses for a Pencil! Make a space mobile. Calculate the circumference of the Earth. Scratch your brain. Poke at toads. IMPALE EVERY ORIFICE OF YOUR OWN FACE!! Boy: Mrs. Kenyan! He's creeping us out again! Teacher: Pinhead! What have I told you about succumbing to your demonic urges in class? You can go cool yourself down in the principal's office, mister! Girl: (thinking) I feel your pain, Pinhead.

What if no one enjoys what I wrote? What if I wasted all this time? I don't know, bro, but I get it. I've felt that way. So have many other writers. It sucks, but it happens. I'm not going to say "everyone will love it!" because who knows? But doing something you love and enjoyed is never a waste.
