This year I started growing a home garden bc I’d rather be bloomscrolling than doomscrolling. Hope I can edit my posts here.

Nearly-perfect printed and handwritten text recognition is the most consequential technical contribution to the study of human culture of the last fifteen years, and it's not even close.

It fundamentally changes our (both lay and expert) relationship with the written past.

Earlier this month, the House Oversight Committee released a flotilla of Epstein emails—more than 20,000 in total. What if you were able to read them like emails?

That’s the simple premise behind “Jmail,” a re-skinning of the documents programmed to look and feel like an everyday Gmail account.
The uncanny Gmail clone that drops you straight into Epstein’s inbox.
A clever bit of digital wizardry turns the 20,000-plus email dump into a working Gmail parody you can search, sort, and star.

This morning we harvested, rinsed and packed 3 ice boxes full of beautiful red lettuce.

The communal garden (a Friends meeting endeavor; I’m a foaF) grows for the Pasadena Friends In Deed food pantry.

I took our harvest there. Big sorting bc there’s a huge turkey giveaway tomorrow.

I’m decluttering in my home office (personal paper archaeology!) & I just uncovered a business card for a disaster recovery fund dating back to the 2007 Slide Fire in the San Bernardino mountains.

There are layers to this. Layers. Literally (paper strata) and oh my! A disaster recovery fund. 😳 oof.

Altadena in this weather is achingly beautiful. Oh I’ve missed seeing sunlit palm trees against dark rain clouds.
As I drove east on Altadena Drive, it began raining, revealing a rainbow in Eaton Canyon.

(This image has it all. Altadena Drive sign. That Rainbow. No U turn— don’t we all know it.)

In the still-hot San Gabriel Valley (SoCal, Sunset zone 21, USDA Zone 10a) we got an early start with lettuce at the communal garden.
Young seeds transplanted into garden bed on Sep 20, this is how the row looked yesterday.

Why didn’t the lettuce bolt in Hotober? It was grown under shade cloth. 🌱
