At heart, a problem solver. Most often that manifests in my work in software engineering, but I like thinking about anything. Interests: music, media, running, technology, programming, game theory, geopolitics, design, art and the future.

“Base” and “facility” are not even remotely the same thing.

There’s already a facility at the same base for Singapore. A facility means a few buildings so people have somewhere to sleep and so forth.

The Qatar facility has been under consideration for years. It’s for joint training on F-15s.

They will only see reality when the prices in the stores actually rise.

They have to touch the hot stove to understand.

Then they will blame their burn on liberals or immigrants or globalization.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

The UK Government said all of them couldn't afford to be independent, that they were too poor, and in too much debt.

It was lies then, and it's lies now.

Day 12

Paper Thin
– Lianne La Havas
📍London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇬🇷🇯🇲
2020

She delivers this track with a coolness and restraint that somehow brings to mind Roberta Flack.

I'm just thinking about how Mamdani talks (and defends) trans people for two minutes more than the democrats did at the last convention. And the video is only two minutes and five seconds long.

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

Day 11

Alentour de lune
– La Féline
📍Paris 🇫🇷
2020

One of the anchors of my “late night” playlist. This is the only one of Agnès Gayraud's on my list, and it may not be on anyone else’s, but I really dig the vibe of her catalog.

This Qatar deal was worked on as far back as 2021. Here's a Jan 2022 article by the Idaho Statesman about it. (But linking to stripes version of it for paywall reasons)

The Nobell* Peace Prize.

Bluesky gives you those tools, and the freedom to use them – or not.

That seems like an ok thing to me.

I unfollow people who block replies because it’s annoying, but am happy they have the freedom to do what they like.

The flexibility is appreciated.

I *think* this is similar to an arrangement the US military already has with Singapore, and the groundwork for this was laid during the Biden admin.

This app seems like a hell of a way to generate blackmail material: spying on network activity and notifying a partner, but this also means the company would be able to retain all that info as well, for future use.

Incidentally, I’ve also worked with devs whose first impulse is to replace things, without understanding how they work, whether they are fundamentally flawed or just inefficient.

That’s also an ego thing, and just as wasteful.

One must develop the skill of second-order thinking.

The Nobel Peace Prize selection and some comments here provoke two thoughts:

– Fighting for “democracy” is not the same as fighting for “peace”. Democracies are quite happy to have wars when it suits them.

– Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize was bullshit. He had achieved nothing.

More than 200,000 deaths a year can be attributed to freshwater snails. The snails are hosts to deadly parasites, in particular parasitic flatworms known as flukes.

For reference, lions kill about 250 humans per year...which still feels like a lot?

I agree, but would go further and say it’s not confined to programming. Being too attached to solutions spans across discipline. It's an ego thing.

Good devs develop logic-based criteria to help them recognize when to refactor and when to replace.

Day 10

Smokin’ Out The Window
– Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars • Anderson .Paak)
📍Honolulu, HI • Oxnard, CA 🇺🇸

It’s not often that a song and video make me laugh, while still being very good.

Two nights of 3:45am alarms, blazing full moon lighting the sky like daytime and washing out the light of everything else, comet included. Then two days of post-processing battles, as comet processing is maddeningly tricky.

But I finally pulled it off: here is C/2025 A6 Lemmon. 🔭

Putin's apology to Pr. Aliyev, his acknowledgment that the Azerbaijani passenger plane was downed by a Russian missile (or,as he put it,its "fragments"),&his promise to punish those responsible (all said live)are a vivid demonstration of how the balance of power in the post-Soviet space has shifted⤵️
antongerashchenko.bsky.social
❗️Putin admitted that the AZAL plane was shot down by Russian air defense, apologized to the families of the victims and promised compensation.

He added that Russia-Azerbaijan relations need to grow.

Previously, Russia refused to take responsibility for the catastrophe.
