one thing I'd really like to see more of in TTRPG scenes is critics with specific and well-known tastes who review projects outside their own circles anyways. both because critics should strive to understand their own preferences, and because I want sharp critiques from non-target audiences

Adler makes a point: Any game excludes people. Every decision excludes people. The impulse is "exclude no one" but this is wrong, impossible. The question you *should* ask is: Is this game excluding *the same people who every game tends to exclude*? *That* would be wrong.

imagine relying on AI to write your bio and then having the nerve to say you're witty and full of personality

Anderson felt her bio was authentically her even if it was written by a chatbot. “My bio is 100 percent in alignment with my true personality,” she told me. “I don’t have a filter. I’m very witty. I’m full of personality.” Nor did she think using ChatGPT reflected the “bare minimum energy” she loathed. “It took me an hour and change to drill down my bio to be that good,” she explained. “I had to edit it, edit it, edit it down. I have to keep talking to it.” On the other hand, she admits that ChatGPT has sapped her motivation to write a first draft of anything herself, even though she minored in writing in college and described herself as a “wordsmith.” “I’m gonna be honest with you: Once you use ChatGPT, you don’t want to think for yourself anymore,” she said.

i think a lot of conversations about whether or not a game "is safe" would be more productively shaped by:

- how risky is this game
- are players aware of and consenting to this risk
- what are tools players can use to mitigate risk

fundamentally, i come from the assumption that any game can be played safely, that any kind of bleed can be managed at the right table, and that we shouldn't be making games for the least safe, least discursive tables.

You forgot the requirement of being fluent in English, which is often a class and income marker.

TTRPGs are expensive. D&D is especially expensive.

I think it's why TTRPGs have never truly gained mass appeal and remain niche. I think it's why the faces of the hobby are often white, middle class and above. Same goes for the people making games.

It's the biggest barrier to entry in this hobby.
