My grandmother smoked Benson & Hedges Menthol. When I was spending the night at her house, I was often on "run down to the store and get me a pack of cigarettes" duty. The store's owner looked out for me every time 7 or 8 year old me would ask for the wrong ones. The early 80s were a different time.

One of the first times my now-husband came to our house, he told my mom he was heading back home directly and as soon as he left, she asked if he had been raised by his grandparents. I’d never even heard that term before then and all four of my grandparents & my dad were from Alabama or Mississippi.

I have my father’s copy of this album framed and hanging on my wall. It was one of the ones I made sure to grab after he died lest my brother beat me to it.

Once again, the limits of autocorrect reveal themselves. I’m a sociologist and am pretty certain that I meant to type data and not Sara in the text I just sent. This might be the first time I’ve ever actually typed that name on this phone so I have no idea what would have sparked that little moment.

If it’s anything like my one visit to Nassau, it will be a startling amount of intense rain for 15 or so minutes and then it will be like nothing even happened. I hope it is a good trip!

I was just talking with someone about how much I appreciated her autobiography. In addition to how smart she is overall, her racial analyses were better than a number of others I’ve read, including and especially some from some academics.

This is how it starts. We were all into Hamilton a while back so I had to make sure my kids knew the whole story. That's why my rising kindergartener was able to tell other visitors to the Jefferson Memorial back in the summer of 2016 a full story about the "Sally, be a lamb" line from the musical.

My son was home from California last month and wanted to binge watch TGLB the night before he was flying back after I’d raved it for years and when we sat down to watch it, it wasn’t there. I was steaming!

Heard an officer say "let's do it" and then, in the dark, they tackle Rabbi Ben to the ground. He's being loaded into a CCSO wagon now. Broadview police also here screaming at people.

I’d just tell myself this is how my kids could someday become engineers. We did have to have a talk with the youngest when he disassembled his bass guitar two years ago. He put it back together just fine but when we took it in for a repair of something else, we learned that had voided the warranty.

I use novels in some of my classes. Increasingly my undergrad students tell me they’re the first novels they’ve read in years.

My kids read novels in high school & had them assigned as summer reading—my sophomore had to read Ellison’s Invisible Man this summer—but that’s atypical as I understand it

Girl, I tried. The girls at school & on the block tried to teach me. My cousins in North Lawndale & East Garfield Park tried to teach me. I just could not ever figure it out. On a good day, I was able to turn before having the ropes taken away from me. I never had the courage to jump in the rope tho
