In his first council meeting as Wellington mayor, Andrew Little gave a big promotion to controversial rival Ray Chung and opened a political rift between Labour and the Greens.

The abuse Julie Fairey copped after being HIT BY A CAR is exactly what happens when we treat online harm as background noise. Women in politics bear the brunt, especially women of colour. Until NZ actually regulates platforms properly, this will keep happening #nzpol

Wow, this is a great summary of COP30! All the COPs, come to think of it. 🤔
Wow. People are way too chill around an active & uncontained fire in the building they're standing in.

"The way Grambo sees it, it’s a numbers game. If he can draw the attention of officers to himself, perhaps fewer immigrants will get swept up, and that’s a win. “I know I can’t stop them,” he said, “but if I can suck up their time, then at least I can help some people.”"

This is the way.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

I’m constantly in awe of all the clever, articulate women I know who manage to convey complex ideas with ease, empathy, and evidence.

NZ punches above its weight for communicators, especially science and health communicators, and I hope more people appreciate how lucky we are in that regard.

A perfect text explaining why your city should develop its cycleway network.
All the best arguments that you probably already know, but really well written, and very difficult to oppose.

Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

One of the few good things about living in New Zealand is that you can look at the Labour Party and if you are like “wow I’m way more progressive than/left of them”, then you simply don’t have to give your party vote to them and move on with your life guilt free and vote for Greens 🤷🏽‍♀️

It wasn't why I checked 1890s NZ yearbooks, but while I was there I noticed that in 1893 there were about 83,400 kids under 5 years of age, and 382 were killed by measles that year (So half a percent of all under 5s)

If we're serious about managing congestion, mass transit is the only way to go. Light rail to the airport. Bike lanes. Frequent and cheap buses.
The answers are all there. And more roads isn't one of them.
Extra roading means more congestion, not less. The evidence is unequivocal.

My wife's school has released a similar letter.

It's a reminder that Seymour and National trampling all over Te Tiriti is completely at odds with what our communities actually want, and I really hope they get punished for this at the next election. #nzpol
My daughter's school has just sent us a letter from the board reaffirming its commitment to honouring Te Tiriti and respecting and working with Te Āti Awa, whose land the school sits on.

They say "while national policy settings may shift, our values, commitments and relationships do not have to".
