I think this is a tragedy for the CofE. It means they are still a long way from where the country of which it proclaims it is the national church is on gay marriage. How should gay people, or those of us who have gay friends or family members, think of an institution which doesn't respect them?

See if you make an announcement such as “There is fixed, structural damage in the ticket hall at Mornington Crescent” I am going to spend the next 35 minutes trying to decode it

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Phew, that's ages away, I'll worry about it later
Bit of a departure for Nige but I guess everything is political.

“The advantages of a first past the post system, of course, are that it prevents an overly fragmented parliament in which a stable governing majority cannot be found, and that it keeps the radical right down.”

I find it amazing that we live in societies where pretty much everyone thinks they would have been in the French Resistance/Rebel Alliance/Sufragettes or would have ‘shot Hitler if they had had the chance’, and yet even the mildest acts of political dissent and protest are vilified.
Perhaps the author is hallucinating.

We already have a system where unwilling, unpaid "volunteers" are made to do work in the community. It's called Community Payback, undertaken by convicted offenders.

So Labour's message to people wanting to come to the UK and build a life is literally "We'll treat you like criminals."

Budget dilemmas look to be an ocean apart from ours just across the Irish Sea. (Just look at that sub-headline!)

Really wonderful evening at the Southbank Centre hearing wonderful performances of Beethoven’s third piano concerto and Saint-Saens organ symphony, plus a lovely new piece by Gabriela Ortiz. On Radio 3 on Monday and on Sounds for 30 days thereafter!
If you see this, post a concert picture you took.

It will all be worth it when documentary makers get to play the White Stripes song, "Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine" underneath this bit of US history.

What’s the most Tory-coded thing you actively love?

Me: Essex. Elgar. Country pubs.
I'm in a profession which (for historical reasons) had a lower level of privately educated people than you'd expect. My close work friends are all state educated. All of them (apart from me) have sent their kids to private school.
Withdrawing from the ECHR is the new Brexit: a misguided act that will not solve the problems it seeks to address (screenshot from @theobserveruk.bsky.social)
WTF? 17 year-old is applying for a provisional licence. Since when was this a thing?

See I think Starmer could get ahead of this by just saying, "Peter Mandelson is exactly the kind of slimeball we need in Washington right now."
