Starting Wind and Truth. The structure is didferent. It's not in the 5 sections we've been accustomed to. And there is no Ars Arcanum. Not being Knights of WaT introduces another small imperfection in the symmetry around the series and I love it already. #Stormlight5Spoilers

Do you really have any rights if they are openly saying they will just make up reasons to detain you?
thematthill.bsky.social
Wow. Greg Bovino admits on camera that his agents can detain people if you look scared, change your demeanor, or grip a steering wheel too tight.

As his unmasked agents walk around with large guns to scare you, they may arrest you just for that — even if you're a U.S. citizen.

You can tell it’s October when ppl start spreading drug sadism myths about expensive drugs given for free to school-age children, since children usually have the means to purchase more drugs…

Anyways, we actually know pretty definitively that “fentanyl-laced marijuana” isn’t a thing & never will be

However, in a situation where an agent of the state, acting under color of law, has unjustly killed or attempted to kill, and especially when they conspire to hide that fact, then the state has already exercised power over life & death. The agent facing that as a consequence takes it no further.
themacaran.bsky.social
You have kind of summed up the reasoning I glossed over. My objection to the death penalty is not philosophical. I do think there are acts heinous enough to be justly responded to with execution. But I do not trust our government to wield that power responsibly.
themacaran.bsky.social
You know, I have said before I hat I for abolishing the death penalty, but I could be convinced we should keep it on the books specifically for so-called "law enforcement" personnel who do shit like this.

We have a word for people who engage in this conduct, they are called criminals.

Thinking about the early closeted days as a teenager and a memory I hadn't thought about for ages popped in my head.

As a teen I was DEEP in the Experimentation->Shame->Repression->Repeat cycle that lasted until I came out at 28 and one way I experimented was sneaking make up from my stepmother

“federal agents detained nearly every resident of the 130-unit building—including children and babies—placing them in zip ties and separating them by race into vans for more than two hours early Tuesday morning.”

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

One way you do that is by reviewing your response after the fact with a mind open to the possibility that you may have been wrong, rather than doubling down on the worst possible interpretation of how complex communication might have been read.
themacaran.bsky.social
Yeah that's as fucked up an attitude as the other place "cis is a slur but faggot is fine" attitude.

As mods it is possible to both take something seriously and recognize that context, cultural differences, and intent matter.

The MAGA #SCOTUS is enabling "Trump engage in a spree of autocratic vandalism that broadly corrupts" the fed. govt but will likely shut down those "king-like" powers if Ds are positioned to take over.

@brianbeutler.bsky.social ▶️ why GOP operatives in SCOTUS robes have made court reform essential. ↘️
"Thus, over the first months of his second term, the court has settled into a new rhythm: When Trump needs freedom from injunctions and restraining orders imposed by lower courts, the Republican justices race to his rescue, typically without explaining themselves. Then, they hit the brakes, giving him plenty of running room to engage in illegality before issuing decisions on the merits.

This is dirty pool, and the justices aren’t even really trying to conceal it. But I don’t think most Democratic critics of the court have thought through how this approach can be used to give Trump a one-time only pass to break laws and steal spoils that will never apply, under their eventual precedents, to future administrations.

Perhaps the Republican justices simply think there will never be another transfer of power. But their approach is consistent with another strategic objective, too: allowing Trump to engage in a spree of autocratic vandalism that broadly corrupts the federal government, before shutting down his claims to king-like power in a way that prevents Democrats from quickly fixing things in 2029."

I think this covers the intersecting core issues. But I think the basic issue here is relatively simple: bad leadership responds to criticism erratically and viscerally, rather than listening, evaluating, discussing… Bad content moderation is fixable, but not if the leadership sucks.

tl;dr: Bluesky began with genuine promise: a new social media platform where users could feel safer, but inconsistent moderation quickly eroded trust.

When systemically marginalized users pushed back, Bluesky’s leadership minimized concerns and began to target them for bans.

I know it's not always easy to tell whether you're being given illegal orders, but when you're in one state's National Guard and find yourself getting deployed into another state against its governor's wishes you should really stop and ask yourself if there's anything you're going to say no to.

echos through all the world proportional to the power and influence the person has. And that is, in many ways, what drives the story of "The Farthest Shore"
themacaran.bsky.social
I have thought about this quote for year, and I've come to the conclusion that it only has truth for those who are trying to do what is right. If you do not care about the rippling repercussions of your actions (as so many with power do not) then you can "do anything" and when you do that harm
themacaran.bsky.social
“You thought, as a boy, that a mage is one who can do anything. So I thought, once. So did we all. The truth is that as a man's real power grows and his knowledge widens, ever the way he can follow grows narrower: until at last he chooses nothing but does only and wholly what he must do.”
themacaran.bsky.social
This kind of rhetoric is why we have such a divided country now. Grant absolutely focused on punishing the south, stripping it of resources rather than rebuilding and promoting industry and economic growth.

That sowed the seeds of today's fascism as surely as the treaty of Versailles did in 1919.

In all the chaos, I would urge folks to remember that a lot of folks now don’t know when their next check will come.

The vast majority are good people who love this nation deeply, and many of them are still working despite not knowing when they’ll be paid

Have compassion.
