So sad to hear that Diane Keaton passed 😢 this one hurts just as much as Robin Williams and Anthony Bourdain 💔

Coming up for air after a busy summer +
wrapping up my first 2 weeks at my new job 🎉

Getting it all down in a blog post soon (🤞) until then, here’s a cool photo I just took of a spider web covered in rain drops against the garage shingles that my kids are painting 😍
Spider sitting in the center of a large web covered in dewdrops, hanging under a roof. Brightly painted wood panels in red, purple, pink, green, blue, and yellow are visible behind the web.

excited for a future where I'm simultaneously not-dead-enough to be allowed to have a miscarriage, yet not-alive-enough to keep my own heart and lungs

Given the current political climate in the US, this seems like a very scary prospect. Yikes. No. Just, no.
A screenshot from the NYTimes. The headline reads: "Donor organs are too rare. We need a new definition of death."

“A family!! Of birds!!”

Y’all. I died 😂😭🤣🤦‍♀️

“Yeah!!” he says, nodding and staring intently in the same direction he’s pointing.

As we’re driving on the highway, my 6yo points and yells “mom, look there’s a whole family on that roof!”

Kind of concerned? I screen the rooftops where he’s pointing and make sure, because I can’t find anyone: “a family??”

Have been watching @ministryoftesting.com's Leading With Quality convos too. @jennydoesthings.bsky.social's energy is contagious! And her push for QA leadership community really stuck with me.

Read the latest Testing Experience magazine, @lisacrispin.bsky.social's article on how to *not* use metrics was very relevant, and @the-qa-guy.bsky.social's article on gender & accessibility testing is one every tester should read.

Between summer chaos, family travel, and interviews (2 this week! 🤞) I finally had time to write a little catch-up on my blog ✨

I’d love to know what this brings up for y'all! Especially if you’ve been the first QA hire on a team or helped make that hire and seen it go sideways 🫠

I unpack this (and what teams that *do* get value from QA do differently) in my article on @ministryoftesting.com: When hiring software testers doesn't work (and what to do BEFORE you hire them)

(It’s a free read - no membership required.)
When hiring software testers doesn't work (and what to do BEFORE you hire them)
Find out what’s really behind testing hires that fail (hint: it’s rarely because the tester couldn’t handle the job!)

When teams hire QA folks hoping for quick quality wins without also making room for quality work to *actually* work, it’s not surprising when "moar automation" doesn’t add up to real quality.
Meme of a cartoon character holding a broom and shouting enthusiastically, with the text “AUTOMATE ALL THE THINGS!” — parodying overenthusiastic automation culture.

I saw a LinkedIn post not too long ago about a startup CEO who believed hiring QA folks “does more harm than good”.

I’ve seen enough to know that sometimes, he's right. Just not for the reasons he thinks.
