I started writing when I was six, binding little books together with construction paper and yarn, and people really think I'm gonna be horny to drink from the LLM recombinant barf trough "trained on" all my favourite authors plus like Stormfront with a smattering of incel forums?? Not really, man

Wow. Greg Bovino admits on camera that his agents can detain people if you look scared, change your demeanor, or grip a steering wheel too tight.

As his unmasked agents walk around with large guns to scare you, they may arrest you just for that — even if you're a U.S. citizen.

yes, it does...it's a pretty invasive surgery, and some people do well with it, but there are plenty of documented risks

oooh "the faith sentence," I like that, very nice

how do so many people fundamentally not understand that creating art is intrinsically rewarding and, even though it involves effort and frustration, is a transformative experience that also feels like a brain massage?

Please donate and share for Samaa’s in-laws. Their fundraiser is very small and bluesky has been harming them with deletions 😓

just watched a dozen people ask microsoft copilot experts their most pressing questions and those questions were 90% “how do i turn it off?” and “when i turn it off, is it really off or is it spying on me?”

I'm afraid this would require a functional moral compass, and at least a passing interest in moral consistency and integrity, and I have grave doubts about how many are in possession of these

only time you'll get a frank admission of the failure of dieting for long-term weight loss is in the intro sections of studies on GLP-1s or bariatric surgery...rest of the time it's referenced as a proven treatment (omitting long-term data ofc) or promising treatment

epistemic closure at its finest

hate to be that guy, but can't help but notice how closely this mimics decade upon decade of dieting-for-weight-loss research, which almost always found it to be ineffective in the long-term, riddled with potential harms (often glossed over) and then went on to recommend...dieting harder, for longer

This morning I heard the CBC reporting on a recent KPMG report on AI in post-secondary - it basically said 73% of ppl are using it and most of them find it’s harming their thinking skills, thus “ethical” AI skills should be taught better…

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

I spoke with a journalist about this back when research was emerging about the internet disinhibition effect, and I made an analogy to road rage and she said there was also research on how being in a car produces a similar disinhibition effect...can't find the exact studies now but it stuck with me

Watching antisocial driver behavior in the school drop-off line makes it really clear that the pandemic destroyed whatever few shreds remained of the social compact, just pathological selfishness on display every day

Accepting this as an argument means accepting that, as an educator, your primary commitment is not to educating your students, or to propagating knowledge of your subject, but to finding and securing new markets for products in whose success your employers (or their bosses) have some kind of stake.

The basic structure of so much commentary, some in the guise of academic study, reduces to:

(1) generative AI products are detrimental to the goals of education

(2) therefore, the goals of education must change.

Without the tacit axiom that AI has authority behind it, that just doesn’t follow.
