Lifelong Democrat, often disappointed at Dems “moderation”. Yankee who’s lived in the South (well, Raleigh) for 20 years. Used to think I’d be dead before the apocalypse, now not so sure!

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

If this country was truly “pro-life,” we would have Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, gun reform, universal child care, and a living wage.

The right-wing agenda isn’t about “life.”

It’s about control.

Regulations are what keeps ordinary Americans healthy and, often, alive.

It took spoiled meat and rodent droppings out of our food. It took harmful lead out of our gasoline and paint. It took poison out of our water.

Deregulation only achieves one goal: making rich corporations richer.

This. Thank you Congressperson Ross (my rep!)
ROSS: Does a convicted sex offender like Ghislaine Maxwell deserve special privileges in prison?

BONDI: No. But she was not transferred to a lower level--

ROSS: She needs to be moved back to a maximum security prison

We can always count on their first instinct: a lie to protect themselves. “Top admin…officials quickly claimed that the closure was in response to a sudden incursion of drones from Mexican drug cartels that required a military response, with…Duffy declaring…that “the threat has been neutralized.”

Don’t forget Minnesota
Don’t look away from MN. ICE is still wreaking havoc across the state - changing their tactics to deceive Minnesotans - pretending to be construction workers or folks delivering groceries. Still over 2,000 ICE agents in the state. They’re not going anywhere, your anger and outrage shouldn’t either.

Yes! Been stymied a lot by non-gift links on BlueSky lately (and I try to use my gifting privileges with NYTimes generously)
I want to thank everyone who posts gift articles of really important stories that all Americans should read but are behind paywalls so most can’t.

There are some stories that are so important to the public interest that media companies should remove paywalls on some occasions.

👀Now that ICE/DHS are planning to buy ‘mega’ warehouse detention centers across the US to house human beings you might want to listen to this gentleman’s history lesson that he delivered at a city council meeting in AZ. Congress needs to have hearings on this like yesterday.

Immigrants are carrying this country on their backs while the right screams into the void.

Here’s the Cato Institute report:

Cato Study: Immigrants Reduced Deficits by $14.5 Trillion Since 1994
The best way to balance the budget is to reduce spending—particularly on wealthy retirees—but rather than hinder our efforts to control deficits, immigrants are helping.

Oh Thommy! You’re winning me over!
Raju: the president called you a loser

Tillis: I am thrilled about that, that makes me qualified to be homeland security secretary AND senior advisor to the president.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million Jewish people murdered by the Nazis, as well as countless other victims.

We honor their lives by rejecting the evils of antisemitism, dehumanization, and authoritarian violence wherever they appear.

Never again means never again for anyone.

It's not quite the most pressing issue at the moment, but the American people absolutely have a right to know the names of the federal officials who shot and killed a man peacefully protesting, who was on his knees, prone in the street when they shot him in the back.

This! Great that Bovino is out (if he really is) and Noem is going (ditto), but that is nowhere near enough.
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

This isn't about "training issues." The murderer who executed Renee Good has been with ICE for 10 years, and according to DHS, the murderer who executed Alex Pretti has been there for 8 years.

These aren't "new recruits," or officers that can be "retrained." ICE can't be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Abolish ICE is not enough.

Stern words for Greg Bovino or Kristi Noem is not enough.

We need prosecutions and trials.

Anything short of this position fails to address the gravity of this moment.
