I have a tendency to "draw from memory". If it's a character I've drawn often enough, like Daisy, I may have memorized close to 90% of her design, so okay, cool. But MOST of the time, I just want to draw, I have a "pretty good" picture of the character in my head, and I'm somewhere where I can't just pull up my phone to look up references, like when I drafted Doreen here while standing in a grocery line. "But lots of the details still came out right!" Nuh-uh, that came AFTER, when I had to do LOTS of erasures to fix up the acorn-like padding on her sleeves, and damn, she got through SO far into the process before I realized I LEFT OUT HER EARS. So, if there was one thing I feel that made me a better artist, it's the simple acceptance of my mistakes, AND HOW I LEARNED TO NUKE THE DRAWING WITH AN ERASER if I need to fix something. I'm a bit proud of my lettering though. I've been writing in a "comic font" ever since high school, because I was writing my own comic at the time, and had to do my own lettering. Said comic was in large 12 x 18 inch sketchpads, and I had no computer or scanner, and for that matter, even professional comics did not have computer lettering yet (Shout-out to lettering legend Tom Orzechowski, who seemingly lettered practically every comic I read at the time.) If anything, it led to my teachers liking my written assignments, because my handwriting became easier to read than most! So... yeah. Also The Emperor's New Groove reference, and a touch of Peanuts' Woodstock chatter, because I'm the type of nerd who always has to reference something!

Had a bout of stress injury/sprain on my drawing hand for most the holiday, and it's finally 90% healed.

So I've been getting back to drawing, but taking more breaks along the way.

There it is... first "accomplishment" of 2026 is beating NES Battletoads, "finally".

Quotes due to the use of save states and having to remap some of the controls during the Clinger Winger stage due to the Pro Controller d-pad feeling sluggish.

Just about a year on, and thinking about this again. Mainly because I flipped through my first graphic novel, TMNT Book IV, which inspired a good chunk of the plot of the first live action movie.

It was definitely more violent than anything pre-teen me had seen from the cartoon, that's for sure.

Just remembering when I was a kid, seeing warnings of 'graphic imagery', 'graphic violence', etc., leading to the assumption that 'graphic novels' were going to be filled with ludicrous levels of violence and gore.

I humbly take back the pride I felt at being able to beat Battletoads on the NES. As it turns out, the Clinger-Winger hypno-buzzball was slower on the Famicom version of the game, which is the one I played on my NES using an adapter back in the day.

I can still handle the Turbo Tunnel at least!

Mega Man 3 robot masters, with a more mechanical flair. Mega Man 3 robot masters merged into a giant super robot, which I felt would have been a better final boss than what we got with Gamma. Mega Man and Rush drawn for scale.

There's a lot I feel that could be improved on this drawing, but as I don't usually draw men, that's certainly a given. I'll likely revisit this pic again in the future, either with the same characters or not. The layout itself was easy enough: Rogue is a strong girl, and Gambit is the type of suave playboy who might take being sweetly coddled, but not if it takes him off his coolness game. As always, I went with their 90's looks, complete with the banded metal boots. While the art is cleaned up some through Clip Studio Paint, and some texture brought back by way of sharpening the image, the vellum board I usually use felt different and off for this one, to the point I actually considered scrapping it and starting all over. Might have been due to the storms and humidity around the time I worked on this, but the pencils didn't feel "right" going over the surface while sketching, and even during the shading stage. I'm glad I stuck with it to the end, and it looks good enough-- my mild dissatisfaction with the final pic lies in my own execution of the concept, not the way my tools behaved. I've been actively going for a certain visual language in my art style. Anime-inspired of course, but I'm sticking to certain style rules I'm placing for myself, such as the way I structure bodies, to the way I draw hair. Rogue's curly, wavy hair is an example of that. I expect that maybe even the way I render bodies, faces and expressions may change down the line, and I don't know if I might like how it may look at first. But as much as I've had to accept the changes when an artist I follow adopts a new style, I should be just as open to making such changes in myself as well. Even if it may lead to actually drawing more males.
