This is my kind of good trouble.
In Monrovia, California, protesters are purchasing 17¢ ICE scrapers from Home Depot and immediately returning them to create long lines and slow down the entire store. Their aim is to disrupt sales and convey a message opposing ICE raids occurring in their neighborhood.

Woah!

Ontario passed a law starting Jan 2026 that it is illegal for companies to ghost you.

If you have interviewed for a job they are legally required to inform you if they hire someone else or close the position.

The law also requires salary transparency on listings and disclosing use of AI

“solution-shaped objects” is a plague on our society

i’ve been ranting about how cos that create customer support tools — and the companies that use them — pretend “closing a ticket” is The Job of support since 2009
"writing code to solve a problem" used to have "understanding the problem" as a prerequisite. but vibecoding allows solution-shaped objects to be produced without any of the hard-won understanding. beware of solution-shaped objects.

common culture and common society are two different things -- it is not necessary to have one to have the other -- i will be thinking on this for a long while.
In my article, I quoted something from Stuart Hall's "Culture, Community, Nation," an essay first published in a 1993 issue of Cultural Studies. He writes:

"It should not be necessary to look, walk, feel, think, speak exactly like a paid-up member of the buttoned-up, stiff-upper-lipped, ...

i wonder for a moment where these gentlemen are, then I think how lucky I am to know a good number of them, actually (they do tend to cluster). and they don't think they're doing anything special -- just being people.
This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

i went with a city commission to tour one of the large ships (much smaller than this). we learned shipbuilding companies keep sizing up these ships faster than cities can build large enough docks to accommodate them; communities perpetually spend billions on infrastructure yet always lag behind
Modern Cruise Ships look extremely stupid.
