Part adjunct, part self-employed, entirely neurodivergent. She/her in STEM, i.e., had pronouns before people got offended by them. Can't believe it's controversial to not want SARS. Also plays with string 🧶

Hey new followers, I recognize a few of you from Bird Hell Site (detector webapp came online or got noticed?) so I assume y'all know this, but so the rest of you know what's in the tin:

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

The public made noise for Liam Ramos and it got him released from Dilley.

Now we must make noise for 7 year old Diana Crespo.

Her parents were taking her for emergency medical care when ICE grabbed them, and she’s rotting in the camp sick and exposed to measles.

Get them out!

I'm leaning air conditioning vent sounds, with increasing creaking and groaning until someone catches on.
Need ideas for this year's April Fools bluetooth speaker prank. Last year I hid it behind stuff on a shelf and switched on Purrli and I'd like to top it this year.

The regime is going to court to overrule a judge’s order to release 5 year old Liam Ramos from custody.

They’re spending tax dollars fighting to lock up a child

Arguing to send him back to a camp where children scream “let us out”.

A camp with a measles outbreak.

Monsters.

We have more cops than we need anyway...any legitimate functions that have been assigned to ICE can be taken away and assigned elsewhere, and the whole damn remaining organization thrown into a woodchipper that has its outflow side pointed at a dumpster fire.
Survey data shows that most Americans do not want to rein in ICE. They want to abolish it.
Federal agents tear-gassed demonstrators and children in Portland.

An agent in Colorado stole a woman’s phone and threw her to the ground.

The disgraced former head of Border Patrol urged mass arrests.

This isn't what Americans signed up for. We must rein in ICE.

TFW a plastic part of your *old* inkjet printer breaks, so you think about buying a 3D printer to fix your 2D printer.

Home from protesting

They'll be going at it a while yet I think, but apparently 41 is too old to forget to pregame an ibuprofen

Once at a protest, I wore bread on my hat for Sandwich Guy.

People asked why, I mentioned Sandwich Guy, and they were like "ohhhhh! nice!"

Alt text is like telling people the bread is for Sandwich Guy -- it brings more people into getting what you're expressing visually.
Reposting with Alt Text, which is so easy with the live text tool!

Alt text doesn’t just help low vision folk, it gives you 2000 characters to add context, or shade, snark, sarcasm - whatever!

Bonus: Alt text is searchable!

Separation of church and state matters BUT it would be OK if the government were to copy this kind of Biblical values.
"The strangers who reside with you shall be to you as your citizens; you shall love each one as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt"
Thousands of Haitians living in Ohio legally will lose their temporary protected status next week unless a federal court blocks the Trump administration from revoking it. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/01/28/t...

This is sort of a throughline in cases of excessive force used by law enforcement. The civilian is supposed to perfectly adhere to some unwritten code of conduct; the armed professional supposedly trained for such situations is only human & must be given lattitude if they succumb to fear and rage.
The administration is insisting that its masked goons are so emotionally stunted that words can launch them into a murderous rage.

"Our professionals are just ordinary people so ordinary people better act professionally around them, or else."

Has anyone else gotten stuck in the parking lot after work in a doomscrolling hole bc gathering the executive function to turn the damn key and go home a few times lately, or is that just me?

Hatted Ravelry
Reminder that two of Ravelry's top patterns right now are melt the ice hat (knit) and melt the ice hat (crochet)
A reminder — there are *millions* of social sites on the internet, like Storygraph for your reading and Ravelry for your knitting, etc. It’s only the biggest, run by the extremist fascists, that do these terrible things. Don’t define the internet by a handful of apps run by 5 sociopaths.

Don’t causejack. Not ever. If I’m posting about one tragedy, don’t whatabout me with another. It trivialises both subjects, and makes you look a performative, self-important, virtue-signalling public morality cop and I will not endorse your cause - for you have discursively POISONED IT.

You can no longer find my writing on Substack. It is long overdue, but I just can't justify forcing people to use a platform that supports such hateful ideologies just to read my stuff.

So now you can find it on my own site! ravnicanreadingnook.com

This is at the brainstorming stage, but:

Employee-side employment law sounds like a fun specialty bc who you metaphorically use as a chew toy is shitty bosses/companies.

Obviously the "...you lose some" part would be frustrating when applicable, but that would be true for anything.

Signal is secure enough that if something leaks through Signal, the rational conclusion is that the leak is another person in the conversation.

The big unvetted group where you figure out who's bringing the veggie tray to the potluck has infiltrators/blabbermouths in it; post accordingly.
Of course no one should assume Signal is perfectly secure, and yes, for certain extreme circumstances, you should use no electronic comms.

But for 99.9% of Americans right now? “Signal is just as insecure as other forms of comms” is utterly irresponsible and counterproductive advice.
