Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

Hang in there! Fortune favours the persistent

It's all so grotesque. A puppet show to please the ego of a delusional narcissist in his quest for a shiny medal. Bread and circuses.

The Democrats have shown time and time again they're unwilling to countenance anything less than full-throated (and more importantly, fully-funded) support of Israel. And that is why, as a government, they were never going to get any kind of ceasefire. Even a shitty, hollow one like Trump's.
timfordwrites.bsky.social
Trump doesn't care about that part. He wants the Nobel Peace Prize (which he will not get). And he believes that he'll get it so long as he can claim he got a deal. Doesn't matter to him if it holds.

Nevertheless, the principle is demonstrated: Israel only gets away with this shit with US backing.

Is this going to last? Almost definitely not. Netanyahu has basically no incentive, especially once the remaining hostages are accounted for, to keep the peace. I fully expect he'll find some weak casus belli like "Hamas didn't disarm," but his right-wing basically demands he continue the genocide.
timfordwrites.bsky.social
What's especially galling about Trump possibly achieving a ceasefire is how incredibly fucking easy it actually was: yanking Netanyahu's leash.

That was it. That was all Biden ever had to do. And he wouldn't fucking do it.

I'm trying not to be too choked up, because as their post says it's a ton of work and they deserve to rest.
But On Spec is the only Canadian SFF mag I still regularly saw at bookstores like Munro's or Indigo. I still have a stack of back issues.

Our literary world will be poorer with its departure.

With our new issue, we are making the sad announcement that this will be the final year for On Spec. See www.onspec.ca for details.

Having worked for SFF mags, I know how they rely on passionate ppl volunteering so much time and effort, and you were always some of the best.

You guys deserve a well-earned rest. You've accomplished so much and given a home to so many great stories by great writers.

Thank you and excelsior!

I'm delighted to report that I briefly thought this was a rant about the protagonist from Kingdom Hearts being a whiny lil dingus

I would totally forgive this if there was any chance it would work but it absolutely will not. As it is this just a bonfire of Carney and Canadian credibility.

"You are a transformative president" -- I regret to inform you that Mark Carney is kissing Trump's ass

Here's what that looks like in comparison. Both map screenshots taken at the same magnification. The Bike Valet at 200 bikes takes up less than a third of a building's first floor.

A parking lot of similar size takes up an entire block.
timfordwrites.bsky.social
I couldn't resist poking my head in on my lunch break to see how packed in the Bike Valet was today. Over 200 bikes, scooters, cargo bikes and other devices. If this were car parking it would require a surface lot the size of the Royal Athletic Park lot.

This...actually does make a kind of sense.

Hearing from my coworkers at the Victoria Bike Valet downtown that they are FULL, as the BCGEU labour protest amasses large numbers to head to the Legislature.

This is, in my recollection, the first time we've actually had to turn people away.
