Great news, to hear that @zachlowenba.bsky.social is headed to the Ringer. Welcome to... (whatever the new pod will be called)!

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

Now that the NYT, WaPo and LA Times have knelt and kissed the ring, what’s the last American newspaper of record standing? The Boston Globe? Chicago Tribune? My hometown rag, the Philadelphia Inquirer?

Looking back on this year, the two most interesting pieces I cut were a business hagiography for Ann Winblad and an elegy for Sandy Robertson - more for the fun of the archival image treasure hunts than the (also) engaging stories themselves.

I free-caught a punt near the end of the half in a high school 🏈 game some 50 years ago, tried to convince our head coach that we should go for the free kick. He thought I was nuts, wasn’t aware of the rule. We took a knee. Happily, it didn’t matter - but it could have. What a great, vestigial rule.

Egad, these #Vikings unis and helmets are hideous. It feels like I'm watching Penn State. Or the old Colts. #MondayNightFootball

Annual reminder:

Die Hard is about using impossibly limited resources to defend a tower from foreign invaders.

Die Hard is a Hanukkah movie.

Sidenote to the set of stories I just finished up this week: lots of archival material, which I polished, extended out to 16x9 and upscaled significantly using quasi-AI tools.

Wrapping up 3 profiles I cut every year this season, for a business awards show. Invariably, I fall for the people and their stories. I'm thankful that, for the most part, the plutocrats in our town are socially conscious and left-leaning.

Stopped by the (very) soft open for India Basin's new park in Hunter's Point. It will be a nice greenway , for walkers, riders and kids. And birds!

i can attest to at least one puerto rican voter in pennsylvania who was not planning to vote and now intends to vote for harris as a result of last night’s display

The @nytimes, @washingtonpost and @latimes' advisory boards all voted to endorse and support Harris. These papers' owners blocked the endorsement. They are afraid of retaliation by a future Trump administration. Harris should note this fact publicly, and thank the editorial boards for their support.

FWIW, Harris worked at the McD's on Central in Alameda - which for those who don't know is an island adjacent to Oakland in the SF Bay. I worked near there by the Oakland estuary in the mid-'80s. Would occasionally eat at that McD's. Missed her by a couple of years. Bummer!

My guess is, the reason Donald Trump malaprop’ed January 5 as Election Day earlier this week is that he’s been party to a lot of J6-24 conspiracy planning these past weeks, just let the cat out of the bag in a senior moment. The 2 months after Harris’ election are going to be extremely precarious.
October 18, 2024 at 4:39 AM
If Harris wins the election, Madame President should refuse to be sworn in by the complicit Chief Justice, and instead choose either Jackson or all 3 left-leaning justices. Roberts has lost the standing to deserve the honor, by his actions this past term.

One thing positive about a week-long heat wave: our community garden is popping off. Fall workday was a success, the new gardeners are up to speed and our pumpkin's oranging up.

Still waiting for a statue of Jefferson Davis trying to evade capture by wearing a woman’s frock. Lee begging Grant to accept his surrender. Stonewall Jackson getting fragged by his own men. You know, Southern heritage
