Minnesota democrats issued a statement attacking their opponent solely on the basis of his criminal defense work. They essentially cite fulfilling the requirements of our Constitution as evidence of lacking a moral compass. A reminder that the erosion of the rule of law can come from all directions.
ST PAUL – Today, the DFL Party released the following statement in response to Chris Madel’s announcement of his candidacy for Governor: “Chris Madel built his career defending violent and exploitative criminals. He represented fraudsters, rapists, and pedophiles, getting many of their charges and cases thrown out along the way. Madel desperately wants to be seen as a pragmatist, yet he jumps to defend criminals charged with hate crimes against our communities. With such a checkered history of clients, he lacks a moral compass to be Governor. He would take Minnesota in the wrong direction,” said Minnesota DFL Chair Richard Carlbom. “The contradictions continue. Despite claiming to be ‘tough-on-crime,’ Madel fights to let criminals get out with little consequence. The platform of law-and-order that Chris Madel campaigns on is a farce built on years of defending Minnesota’s worst.” After an Illinois man bombed a Minnesota mosque and attempted to set fire to an abortion clinic, Madel defended him in court, claiming he “has done his level best to turn a new page in his life.” Madel got child pornography charges dropped for a man facing allegations of knowingly engaging in crimes involving sexual materials with a minor. Madel has defended clients who made violent threats against public officials and members of law enforcement. One client threatened to murder FBI agents over their arrest of a man charged with giving material support to ISIS. Full alt text in previous image

For a little under an hour — 41 minutes, according to a separate US official — Bradley and the rest of the US military command center discussed what to do as they watched the men struggle to overturn what was left of their boat, the sources said. Ultimately, Bradley told lawmakers, he ordered a second strike to destroy the remains of the vessel, killing the two survivors, on the grounds that it appeared that part of the vessel remained afloat because it still held cocaine, according to one of the sources. The survivors could hypothetically have floated to safety, been rescued, and carried on with trafficking the drugs, the logic went.

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie G. Thompson said in a statement “Mobile Fortify is a dangerous tool in the hands of ICE, and it puts American citizens at risk of detention and even deportation.” He also said “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship—including a birth certificate—if the app says the person is an alien. ICE using a mobile biometrics app in ways its developers at CBP never intended or tested is a frightening, repugnant, and unconstitutional attack on Americans’ rights and freedoms.”

We tested out Zenni's anti-facial recognition glasses coating. It actually (kinda, technically) works? "ID Guard" adds a pink sheen to the surface of the glasses that reflects the infrared light used by some facial recognition cameras. So, only threats like that

It turns out every Nexar dashcam came with an AWS key that too high privileges. Which let that individual camera upload its own footage, but also let an attacker access everyone else's footage too. Terabytes of data. Nexar fixed after I contacted www.404media.co/this-company...
The hacker said they were able to access one of Nexar’s AWS buckets, a type of database run by Amazon Web Services, in which they found more than 130 terabytes of data. That included raw recordings from peoples’ dashcams and GPS data, the hacker said. The issue, the hacker said, was that embedded in every Nexar dashcam was a key to this database which had too high privileges, allowing anyone with the key not just to upload their own camera’s data, but also access that of everyone else. Nexar fixed this issue after being contacted by 404 Media this week. Fernandez-Ruiz said these recordings were users’ private backups.

FIFTH STATUS REPORT Defendants hereby provide notice that that final minor alien of the four mentioned in the fourth status report was returned to ORR custody at approximately 1:30am EDT. The other alien mentioned in the fourth status report was also placed in ORR custody today. Defendants are not aware of any other putative class members that have not been returned to ORR custody. What has it been like shifting from reporter to media executive, managing a staff instead of filing stories yourself? And do you write any of the jokes at The Onion? Or are you strictly managing the business? The Onion’s process is deeply, beautifully inefficient. Every day, our writers take 150 headlines into a physical writers room in Chicago and whittle them down to maybe one or two. These people throw away the funniest sentence I will ever write in my life six times by noon every weekday. The point of taking over this place was to preserve this process, which I learned this week is almost assuredly more rigorous than The New York Times. That’s why I don’t touch any of it. I just try to get more people to pay attention to the output, and get our work into different mediums and new places. We brought back the paper, reinvested in the Onion News Network, bought a full page ad in The Times for something they were going to write anyway. The role is to make the world-class work they’re already doing seep into everyday American life more frequently, and that’s working. You actually can do this, you know. You can just try to highlight the beauty of things you like and not try to vampirically extract value at every step. If people get one thing out of this whole Q&A, I hope it’s that. You do not have to make an A.I. version of your own employees that operate at 1.5x speed but produce purely iterative garbage, especially in media and journalism. People don’t actually want that shit. Make a good, human thing and people will bend over backwards to support you. This is a valid way to run a company.
