Thrilled to be included in Best Australian Science Writing 2025.
Edited by Zoe Kean, Tegan Taylor, foreword by Veena Sahajwalla.
Including with so many incredible writers.
If he does, that's on him. How about he assumes women are functioning human beings who can a) read signs and b) follow instructions, and may even have posted something down a postage shute before? Rather than using it as an opportunity to display his "superior" knowledge? Ugghhhhh

As others have said, no one is demanding mask mandates in all public places. A reasonable solution is to have mandates in places that clinically vulnerable people cannot avoid. Public transit, healthcare facilities, grocery stores and pharmacies. CLEAN THE AIR in schools and all other buildings.

It pisses me off to no end that Long Covid affects hundreds of millions of people globally and no one I know can name a Long Covid expert or any of the leading labs looking into it. It’s simply not a topic people want to pay any attention to, and I consider that living in fear, or at least denial.

Dunno if youse are across this... but it's forecast that in Sydney on Wednesday the temp will be 38C. (100 F)

It's OCTOBER! That's FIFTEEN DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE!

Our Government and fossil fuel companies are determined to cook us alive! Boil the oceans. Kill our forests. Turn habitat to ash.🥺😩

The cognitive dissonance required to complain about people off sick from work when nobody wears masks or prioritises clean air is.... Quite something. At least work still provides access to N95s 🤷

Me, having lost my place in tubular bind-off: What obscene clouds darkened the earth on the day this accursed technique was devised? And what beast do I have to sacrifice to work out where I'm up to?

“How is it possible that a peace proposal ignores the ICJ’s July 2024 Advisory Opinion, which reiterated that Israel’s occupation is illegal and must end?

How can it fail to mention Palestinian’s right to self-determination?”

Thanks! I did suddenly work out where I was ... when I'd undone almost back to the beginning 😅

When I was first doing it, I found I couldn't even *think* or I'd lose my place. My whole focus had to be on each step. I absolutely can't talk to anyone while doing it. But yeah, I love the way it looks
Fortunately the joys are many and the agonies are short-lived (like right now, as I'm undoing my tubular bind-off back to the beginning!)
Thanks! A couple of times when this has happened I've been able to work it out, have been able to spot a particular stage and get started again, but right now I'm undoing it, going back to where I started, and if I happen to work it out on the way, it will be a bonus

Dude in grocery store goes “Some common sense advice: masks don’t do anything. Idiot.” I said “Forgive me for not taking ‘common sense advice’ from a guy wearing socks with Crocs in the rain.” I could tell by his face he’s gonna go to sleep tonight thinking about everyone on line laughing.

Long-term effects of COVID-19 on endothelial function, arterial stiffness, and blood pressure in college students: a pre-post-controlled study - BMC Infectious Diseases
Background The COVID-19 has been shown to have negative effects on the cardiovascular system, but it is unclear how long these effects last in college students. This study aimed to assess the long-term impact of COVID-19 on arterial stiffness, endothelial function, and blood pressure in college students. Methods We enrolled 37 college students who had been infected with COVID-19 for more than 2 months. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was used to assess endothelial function, while arterial stiffness was evaluated using the ABI Systems 100, including variables such as ankle-brachial index (ABI), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP). Results Our results showed that FMD was significantly impaired after COVID-19 infection (p < 0.001), while cfPWV and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were significantly increased (p < 0.05). Simple linear regression models revealed a significant negative correlation between post-COVID-19 measurement time and baPWV change (p < 0.01), indicating an improvement in arterial stiffness over time. However, there was a significant positive correlation between post-COVID-19 measurement time and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) change (p < 0.05), suggesting an increase in BP over time. There were no significant differences in ABI and HR between pre- and post-COVID-19 measurements, and no significant correlations were observed with other variables (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that COVID-19 has long-term detrimental effects on vascular function in college students. However, arterial stiffness tends to improve over time, while BP may exhibit the opposite trend.

Have you read "When the Body Says No" by Gabor Mate? It really brings home how being too nice (e.g. "doing stuff for people" when you're not really up to it) can do you in physically. It helped it start to sink in for me that saying no when you want to say no is good for all concerned

Hi @npr.org! We worked late tonight putting together this handy pocket guide!

It doesn't address road design issues, but if we're going to educate road users, we should include drivers.

It's the size of a folded business card. Print it, fold it, put it in your wallet!
